Thailand’s Nong-O Gaiyanghadao added another world title to his already impressive resume today at ONE: Clash Of Legends in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Thai claimed the inaugural ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title after defeating China’s Han Zi Hao via unanimous decision. The five-round affair was an exciting back-and-forth contest, but apart from a brief moment in the second frame, Nong-O never looked in any real danger.

The 33-year-old started slowly, but soon warmed to the task, and with thirty seconds left in the first dropped Han with an elbow. The knockdown appeared to energize the Chinese fighter, who forced the action in the second. Han worked to utilize his speed, throwing punches in fast, efficient combinations. The 23-year-old found some success when shooting straight down the middle. A sharp elbow from Han staggered Nong-O, who almost hit the floor.

Despite Nong-O’s hand touching the ground, it was not a ruled a knockdown, though if it had, it would not have changed the outcome of the contest.

After the second round, regular order resumed with Nong-O taking control. Han continued looking for openings but the Thai’s slick defense meant it was an almost impossible task to land a clean shot.

A New Bantamweight Challenger Emerges

The race to be the next in line for a shot at the bantamweight crown heated up tonight, with four of the division’s top fighters engaging in a pair of back-to-back contests.

Current titleholder Kevin Belingon and former champion Bibiano Fernandes square off on March 31, and following that clash, the doors are wide open for a new challenger to step up. South Korea’s Dae Hwan Kim took on Japan’s Shuya Kamikubo while New Zealand’s Mark Abelardo fought recent arrival, Daichi Takenaka

First up, Abelardo threw his name into title contention with a win over the formerly undefeated Takenaka. Demonstrating it’s not how you start a fight but how you end, Abelardo achieved a last-minute victory after delivering a series of punishing elbows to the face of Takenaka.

Up until it was stopped, the Japanese fighter had controlled the bout with his superior wrestling. Abelardo had no answer to Takenaka’s takedown attempts and despite not suffering any severe damage looked set to be handed a unanimous decision loss.

Then at the start of the third, a brace of elbows from Abelardo rocked Takenaka. The 29-year-old recovered and forced the takedown but Abelardo delivered further elbows from the ground. The strikes opened a nasty cut on the face of Takenaka, forcing a doctor’s stoppage with just seconds left in the fight.

Kamikubo Builds His Case For Title Shot

One man whose stock has risen dramatically is Japan’s Kamikubo. The third-degree judo black belt sapped the life out of Kim on his way to earning a unanimous decision victory. Kim had no answer for Kamikubo’s relentless ground game.

Kamikubo’s constant knees and headshots wore down the South Korean, who looked exhausted by the conclusion of the contest. He may not be the flashiest fighter in the division, but there will not be many bantamweights lining up for the opportunity to face Kamikubo.

After tonight’s showing a title shot or title eliminator seems the natural next step for the Japanese fighter.

Radzuan Loses Her Perfect Record

Earlier in the night, Jihin Radzuan suffered the first loss of her professional career losing via split decision to Team Lakay’s Gina Iniong.

The 20-year-old Malaysian was outstruck and out grappled for the bulk of the three-round atomweight clash. Right from the outset, Iniong, a six-time Philippine wushu national champion began peppering Radzuan with hard rights to the head.

Realizing she was outgunned on her feet, Radzuan went looking for the takedown, initing the first clinch of the night. However, Iniong provided yet another example of how the Team Lakay stable have improved in the grappling department.

The Filipina was relaxed and kept her composure when the fight first went to the ground, working her way to top control. Radzuan’s constant scrambling never allowed Iniong to fire off any serious shots but nor was she able to cause any damage or attempt any submissions herself. The opening round created the template the rest of the fight would follow. Iniong continued to dominate the bout, with Radzuan getting in pockets of resistance at certain points.

It was only in the last ninety seconds of the fight that Radzuan had any real success. Gaining full mount, she unleashed a barrage of strikes to Iniong’s head, before taking Iniong’s back. An attempted rear-naked-choke fell short due to the final horn sounding.

Malaysia’s Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan has been on a roll, winning match after match since embarking on her professional mixed martial arts career. However, her unbeaten streak could be in jeopardy as she faces Team Lakay’s Gina “Conviction” Iniong at the Impact Arena, Bangkok this Saturday, 16 February.

ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS is set to hold a spectacle for fans who will witness a match between two top women’s atomweight contenders making their own cases for a World Title shot. Radzuan, in particular, looks to continue her undefeated streak while the Filipina Iniong aims to claw her way up the divisional ladder.

Despite Iniong’s widely perceived advantage in the striking department, Radzuan remains unfazed as she is also confident in her stand-up abilities.

“We prepared specific drills such as cutting angles, combinations to counter her moves. I am quite confident in my striking also as I am a four-division K1 Muay Thai champ. I competed in boxing so distance management, angles, and all that is nothing new to me,” Radzuan said.

In addition, the Malaysian “Shadow Cat” is also excited to face Iniong because it is an opportunity to take on a representative of the famed Team Lakay — a team Radzuan has witnessed grow immensely over the years.

“Team Lakay is a respectful team and they have been around since 2000. My coach is a good friend of a few Team Lakay fighters and he told me that the Team Lakay Warriors are the nicest people he has ever met, and I believe him. I am glad that I have the chance to share the ring with their warrior,” Radzuan said.

Despite being undefeated, Radzuan admits that there’s still a lot of room for improvement in order for her to stay on top of her game. She is aware of her weaknesses, and is doing her best to correct them.

“I lack the ability to finish a fight. I try very hard, but either my opponents are really good or maybe I lack the KO power. I have been working very hard on that part and you can expect to see me finishing more fights in the future,” Radzuan said.

Though it’s her first time competing outside of her home country professionally, Radzuan is not affected and feels that she is on the same ground with Iniong.

“Competing with a non-Malaysian crowd won’t bother me because Gina will also be fighting in a foreign land so I think it is fair. It is good for me to show my skills and get new fans from another country,” Radzuan concluded.

She also believes that it is also about time for her to expand her fan base outside of Malaysia. And it all starts by Radzuan overcoming the Team Lakay star.

For Gina “Conviction” Iniong, winning her next bout against Malaysia’s Jihin “Shadow Cat” Radzuan at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS is but another crucial task she needs to check off in order for her to reach her ultimate goal — to win the ONE World Title.

Ever since her Team Lakay stablemates brought home prestigious ONE World Titles to Baguio City, Philippines, where she is a native, Iniong too felt the urge to feel the golden strap around her waist and bring pride to her country.

However, as is the case in combat sports, things are easier said than done. The bout with Radzuan, which takes place this Saturday, 16 February in Bangkok, Thailand, is against an undefeated Malaysian who has beaten some of the top contenders in the women’s atomweight division in just a short period of time, contenders like Priscilla “Thathie” Hertati Lumban Gaol and Jenny “Lady Gogo” Huang.

Being a professional mixed martial artist for almost nine years, Iniong knows that the key to defeating a fellow top contender is to acknowledge their strengths and work on a strategy to overcome those.

“What I know of Jihin Radzuan is she is well-rounded,” says Iniong.

“Her ground game is good. I watched her last fight, and I was really amazed with her last performance.”

Despite being known first and foremost as a dangerous grappler with elite-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills in her repertoire, Radzuan is also a striker with an extensive background in wushu and Muay Thai. Iniong knows this and is preparing for all that Radzuan brings to the table.

“Some athletes are focused on striking only, while others only focus on whatever other aspects they are good at, like their ground game,” explains Iniong.

“But you can see that Jihin’s striking and ground game are both very good.”

In order to achieve victory, Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao has been closely monitoring Iniong’s training camp, working on both her offensive and defensive skills on the feet and on the ground.

Despite understanding full well the extent of Radzuan’s capabilities, Iniong feels she still owns the advantage in the striking department.

“Jihin’s weakness is her striking,” she states.

“My game plan in our bout is, if we end up striking, we will strike with each other. If we end up in the ground, I will also play on the ground.

“I trained very hard for this fight. I really prepared, and I am determined to win.”

Working on a sound game plan to bring into the bout, Iniong says that her knowledge and experience is one of the major factors that will contribute to her victory.

Joshua “The Passion” Pacio and Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio both submitted their titles early on this year in heartbreaking losses, and Iniong vows not to start the year off in the same way. She looks to capture a belt of her own, and is eyeing a shot at the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Title if she gets past Radzuan.

“My first impression of Jihin is that she is humble and a good sport, but I think she should watch out for me. I think I have the edge in experience.” says the 29-year-old.

“I predict that our match will end in the second round through ground and pound. I get my strength from seeing my teammates and my seniors with their own belts. I am the only one who is yet to have one, so I am really envious!”

With a stringent goal in sight and support from her teammates and coach at Team Lakay, fans can only expect that Iniong will bring her best into the ring this Saturday night.

“My ultimate goal is to also become a champion and become the pride of Baguio City. We don’t have a female champion yet, particularly in mixed martial arts,” Iniong concluded.

Rene “The Challenger” Catalan’s beginnings at ONE Championship left a lot to be desired, but that is all in the past now.

What matters is the present, and Catalan is finally primed for the biggest match of his career.

He is set to take on former ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito on the undercard of ONE: REIGN OF VALOR on 8 March at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar.

Currently riding on a five-match winning run, Catalan now sets his sights on the crafty Naito, with a World Title shot in the horizon if he manages to defeat his Japanese opponent.

“I am looking to showcase my best form yet against Naito, a former World Champion,” said the former Asian Games gold medalist.

“Our focus in training is how to stop his takedown attempts. Naito will surely want this fight on the ground, it is my job to make sure he doesn’t get a submission when we are on the mat.”

After an illustrious wushu career with the Philippine National Team, which saw him bag medals in Doha, Qatar 13 years ago, Catalan finally ventured into mixed martial arts and he struggled heavily at first.

He started with a 0-2-1 record in The Home Of Martial Arts before finally adjusting and getting his momentum.

Now, the Iloilo City native gets his biggest challenge, as he takes on Naito, who remains to be one of the most dangerous athletes in the weight class.

Naito’s resume is made up of wins over former World Champions, including Team Lakay’s Joshua Pacio, Thailand’s Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, and Brazil’s Alex Silva.

As impressive as Naito’s resume is, Catalan is left unfazed as he plans to leave Myanmar a winner.

“Fans can expect a strong performance from me on fight night,” he said. “I am hungry to challenge for the ONE Strawweight World Title.”

China’s Han Zi Hao has come a long way since his days scouring the streets of Bangkok for loose coins to buy extra food to keep his hunger pangs at bay.

The sacrifices Han made in his youth and the struggles he overcame have helped mold the man and the athlete he is now.

The 23-year-old may be one of the youngest athletes on the ONE Super Series roster, but his natural talent and relentless drive to win have skyrocketed him onto the world stage and into a world title shot.

Han is scheduled to meet Muay Thai superstar Nong-O Gaiyanghadao on 16 February at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS for the inaugural ONE Super Series Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship.

The bout will take place in Bangkok, Han’s second home since he arrived in Thailand, aged 14 almost a decade ago.

Han has lived in the country long enough to have heard stories about the legend that is Nong-O Gaiyanghadao. The 32-year old Thai has won almost everything that is worth winning in Muay Thai, often on multiple occasions.

The four-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Champion will enter the bout against Han as the odds on favorite.

However, beating the odds is something Han has become accustomed to ever since he left China to pursue his dream of becoming a professional Muay Thai athlete.

“After the first week or so in Thailand, I began to miss home. I felt so far away from home in this new country,” he said in an interview with ONEFC.com.

“Sometimes, I cried hiding under the blanket. [When I called home] I told my parents that I was doing fine in Thailand and they shouldn’t worry. However, right after hanging up the phone, I felt so sad and couldn’t help crying.

“I had a determination that I would not go home no matter how hard it was, and I would hide the thought of going home even if I wanted to.”

Han persevered in the face of adversity. He focused his energy into improving himself as a martial artist and was soon racking up wins and capturing regional titles.

The Chinese athlete’s success inside the ring helped make the transition to living in Thailand easier.

His thoughts soon become less about how much he missed home, and more about what he could to do to make those back home proud of his accomplishments.

“My first coach used to tell me, ‘Young children rely on their parents to gain respect. Once grown up, they should honor their parents.

“This is the reason that keeps me going all these years. I want to honor my hometown and my country with this profession, and I want to grow stronger so that I can provide a better life for my family.”

A product of Mad Muay Thai Gym,  Han has been unstoppable since arriving in the ONE Super Series. In November, he became the first ONE Super Series athlete to achieve three victories in the Super Series after a first-round stoppage of Malaysia’s Azwan Che Wil at ONE:  CONQUEST OF CHAMPIONS.

On 16 February, he will get another chance to engrave his name into the history books by becoming the inaugural ONE Super Series Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion.
