As this weekend’s UFC 237 approaches, let’s look back at when Rose Namajunas first defeated Joanna Jedrzejczyk to capture the women’s strawweight title.
This weekend, Namajunas will travel to South America to defend her title against Jéssica Andrade on Saturday at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s a wholly difficult challenge that ‘Thug Rose’ admitted is a frightening prospect today.
However, Namajunas has faced major challenges and overcame them before. She won the 115-pound title back at UFC 217 when she knocked out former boogey woman Jedrzejczyk in a shocking first-round upset. In anticipation of Namajunas’s second title defense at UFC 237, the promotion released that fight on their Youtube channel.
Namajunas went on to defeat Jedrzeczyk for a second straight time at UFC 223. The second time came via decision. A third fight between these two is unlikely; however, if Andrade pulls off the upset this weekend in Brazil, Jedrzejczyk’s title aspirations will look a whole lot better.

Rose Namajunas will be making her first UFC women’s strawweight title defense against an opponent not named Joanna J?drzejczyk this Saturday night.
“Thug Rose” faces Jessica Andrade in the main event of UFC 237 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Although the champion, Namajunas has opted to head into enemy territory, facing Andrade in front of her native Brazilian crowd.
Speaking on today’s edition of “The MMA Hour,” Namajunas admitted that it’s a “scary” prospect, but she fully intends on overcoming the obstacle (via MMA Fighting):
“This time is different from any other time, obviously. This time it’s pretty scary, I must say,” Namajunas said. “It’s kind of, I feel like I’m in uncharted territory even though I have a lot of experience. There’s a lot of things that I do know but there’s definitely a lot of unknowns going into this one.
“I’ve spent not just the last year fighting the same girl, Joanna (Jedrzejczyk), but then years prior to that, even after having other opponents, I still was thinking about her. So this is the first time where I’m not thinking about her.
“I’m thinking about somebody else, thinking about Andrade, and at the end of the day it’s always just a fight against myself, so just remembering that has been a challenge, but it’s something that I’m going to overcome.”
Namajunas pulled off a shocker when she captured the 115-pound title from J?drzejczyk in November of 2017. She was even more impressive in their rematch last year, out-classing the former champion en route to a unanimous decision victory.
She defends her title against Andrade, who is on a three-fight win streak. In her last outing, she knocked out former title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz in devastating fashion.

The UFC returns with a new event this weekend with their upcoming UFC 237 show.
The UFC 237 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET. The preliminary card will air on ESPN at 8 p.m. ET and the UFC’s streaming service, Fight Pass, at 6:15 p.m. ET.
Rose Namajunas vs. Jessica Andrade for the UFC women’s strawweight title will serve as the headliner. Jared Cannonier vs. Anderson Silva in a middleweight bout will serve as the co-headliner.
The UFC women’s strawweight champion is preparing for her return after two fights against Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Their first fight went down in November 2017 at UFC 217 where Namajunas won with a first-round knockout. Their second fight went down at the UFC 223 pay-per-view event in April that saw Namajunas win by decision.
On the flip side, Andrade (19-6) is riding a three-fight win streak as she holds wins over Claudia Gadelha and Tecia Torres. Andrade has also fought Jedrzejczyk for the strawweight title and was defeated via unanimous decision at UFC 211 in May 2017.
Her latest fight came against former title contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz by first round KO. This fight took place at UFC 228 event on September 8, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the American Airlines Center.
Rounding out the five bout main card is Jose Aldo vs. Alex Volkanovski in a featherweight bout, Thiago Alves vs. Laureano Staropoli in a welterweight bout, and Diego Ferreira vs. Francisco Trinaldo in a lightweight bout.
