Two months out from UFC 248, Joanna Jedrzejczyk is ready to once again don strawweight gold, especially given her believe that she has already overcome a very similar challenge to Weili Zhang. This challenge was once a “challenger” when Jedrzejczyk was still the strawweight champion. In fact, it was the final title defense of her […]

UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang has been preparing to face Joanna Jedrzejczyk for a very long time.
Zhang became the new champion following an impressive first-round TKO victory over Jessica Andrade at UFC Shenzhen back in August. Her first title defense will now come against the former strawweight queen at UFC 248 on March 7 in Las Vegas.
And the Chinese star is very ready for what is arguably her biggest task yet.
“I have known about Joanna for a very long time, even before I was in the UFC,” Zhang told SCMP. “I have been preparing for her, and for this fight, for a long time. I know how she moves and how she fights. I always knew that one day we would meet inside the Octagon. I am preparing everything. I am ready.”
Zhang is so prepared for Jedrzejczyk that she even claims she will be fighting in the Polish fighter’s own style.
“I have been training for speed and for power, working on my footwork,” Zhang added. “I am going to fight Joanna in Joanna’s way. No matter if it is wrestling or striking I am ready. Just like my fight in Shenzhen, I will be ready for different situations.”
There is no word as of yet whether the fight will headline UFC 248. However, it’s the only title fight on the card as of now.

Weili Zhang’s first title defense as UFC women’s strawweight champion is set, and she just so happens to be taking on the greatest champion the division has ever seen in Joanna Jedrzejczyk. Zhang and Jedrzejczyk will collide on the UFC 248 pay-per-view (PPV) event from a venue and location yet to be determined on March […]
Zhang and Jedrzejczyk will collide on the UFC 248 pay-per-view (PPV) event from a venue and location yet to be determined on March 7, 2020. Zhang comes off a first-round TKO win over Jessica Andrade to win the strap earlier this year. As for Jedrzejczyk, she earned the title shot after downing Michelle Waterson at UFC Tampa.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Jedrzejczyk offered her thoughts on the matchup against Zhang. Jedrzejczyk admits that Zhang is very powerful and dangerous, but vows to show the Chinese champion what real Polish power is all about.
“Every opponent is different, and she’s definitely very strong,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s young, very hungry, her punches are juicy, and I watch her fight two days ago with Mikey Brown because we – Mikey Brown is crazy about this fight. We’re going to have a good plan, but of course I will have to take this fight second by second. Like I said, she’s very dangerous, but I will show her this Polish power very soon.”
In reference to her “juicy punches” line, Jedrzejczyk says Zhang is a wild fighter and isn’t very technical. She looks forward to taking on a competitor with the strength that Zhang possesses.
“Juicy and crispy and, yeah, she’s wild. She’s wild. Definitely she’s wild,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s not that technical of a fighter, but she’s very strong. She’s big, she’s massive, so that’s why her punches are very juicy. I’m tall in the strawweight division, so I’m never going to be like bully person you know, like big person and very muscular.”
It looks like Joanna Jedrzejczyk will get the first crack at newly-crowned UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang. Zhang earned a strawweight title fight just three wins into her UFC career, thwarting Jessica Andrade with ease in front of her native Chinese crowd in August. A first-round knockout made her the first Chinese champion in UFC history. Now, she’ll take on former division queen Jedrzejczyk, who comes off a decision victory over Michelle Waterson in Tampa.
Jedrzejczyk has won her last two fights at 115 pounds, her only loss coming at flyweight in a title fight against Valentina Shevchenko back in December of last year. After some back-and-forth between Zhang and Jedrzejczyk through the media, it looks like they’ll finally lock horns in 2020.
In a recent interview, Jedrzejczyk suggested she was willing to travel to China to “beat the sh*t” out of Zhang in front of her own people.
“I signed an agreement before the fight with Michelle Waterson,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I knew that after I got the victory I was going to fight for the belt. This is what’s going to happen next, and I’m just waiting for the date and the location, and then we’re going to rock it.
“Anywhere, anytime. Bangkok, Sri Lanka, Warsaw, Toronto, it doesn’t matter where. For me, it doesn’t matter. I will make my way. Even if we have to take a canoe, I will make it to China and beat the s*** out of her.”
Who do you think takes a fight between Zhang and Jedrzejczyk?
