UFC Lightweight bout:  Dennis Siver vs. Matt Wiman

Odds:  (-135 Siver /+105 Wiman )

Betting Pick:  Siver

The opening bout of the evening will feature two extremely skilled Lightweights going at it as “Handsome” Matt Wiman takes on surging German standout Dennis Siver. Both of these guys are on three fight win streaks and on the cusp of entering the top level of the 155 pound division, so a win here would be huge for both men. With both having a lot to fight for and both having versatile skill sets, this should be a very exciting and competitive bout.

“Handsome” Matt Wiman, a training partner of Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, is a very well-rounded young fighter with solid wrestling, decent but powerful boxing, and an effective submission game. Sporting an impressive 7-3 record inside the Octagon, Wiman has carved out a niche for himself in the UFC’s most talent-packed division. He isn’t one of the more dominant fighters in the division, but there are also no really huge holes in his game, which allows him to at least be competitive with anyone.

Dennis Siver is another promising Lightweight with a versatile skill set. His submissions are extremely effective, but he seems to prefer standup fights, and has developed into quite a dynamic and powerful striker. He has great punching and kicks and can finish fights with both. He is also a solid wrestler, both offensively and defensively.

This is going to be a close matchup, but I think Siver is just a little more explosive and a little more versatile. On the feet he is definitely the more dangerous of the two, and his superior wrestling should allow him to dictate the pace of the fight. Wiman is tough and difficult to finish, but I think Siver should control the action and earn himself a unanimous decision win.

Prediction:  Dennis Siver via Unanimous Decision.

UFC Featherweight bout:  Joe Stevenson vs. Javier Vasquez

Odds:  (-220 Stevenson +180 Vazquez )

Betting Pick:  Stevenson

Bet on this fight at Bodog.com

In the opening bout of the evening, Ultimate Fighter Season 2 winner Joe “Daddy” Stevenson will square off against WEC veteran Javier Vasquez. This fight marks Stevenson’s debut at 145 pounds after a long career of fighting at 170 and 155. Stevenson is a very effective grappler with good submissions, takedowns, and ground and pounds, but Vasquez is a very dangerous ground fighter as well and will enjoy a reach advantage on the feet, so this should be a competitive Featherweight debut for Stevenson.

Javier “Showtime” Vasquez, a veteran of Elite XC, Shooto, King of the Cage, and most recently WEC, is a very tough grappler with great submissions who has never been finished in his professional career. While his results were not stellar in WEC, going 2-3 in his last five fights, he is still a threat in any fight that goes to the ground. His striking is not particularly effective or powerful, but neither is Stevenson’s so that shouldn’t be too much of an impediment in this fight. What Vasquez is going to have to find a way to deal with is Stevenson’s superior wrestling and positioning. He has the skills to work off his back, but Stevenson has great jiu-jitsu as well, and Vasquez is going to need to find a way to sweep or escape to control position and score points.

Joe “Daddy” Stevenson has been fighting as a professional since he was a teenager, when his mom had to drive him to his fights. Stevenson is a very effective wrestler with good submissions and excellent submission defense. His boxing is actually technically solid, but his lack of reach really hampers his effectiveness. Still, he isn’t totally lost on the feet, and he has more than enough skill to get a little work done and set up his takedowns. On the ground is clearly where he shines, as he is hard to overcome, great at submitting opponents, and can dole out some serious punishment from top position.

I think that this is a horrible style matchup for Vasquez. On the feet, he will have a reach advantage that should help him stay in this one, but Stevenson is the more skilled striker. More importantly, though, Stevenson has the tools to force this fight to the ground whenever he wants, and Vasquez does not. Vasquez is a great grappler, but Stevenson is notoriously difficult to submit and will enjoy a positional advantage pretty much every time this fight goes to the ground. I expect Stevenson to outbox, outwrestle, and outgrapple Vasquez, brusing him up with ground and pound for a unanimous decision victory.

Prediction:  Joe Stevenson via Unanimous Decision.

Current UFC 132 Betting Odds – On June 2, 2011, UFC 132 will be airing live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the main event of the evening, Bantamweight king Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz (17-1-0) will look to avenge the only loss of his professional career against former 145 pound champ Urijah “The California Kid” Faber (25-4-0). Faber choked Cruz out all the way back in 2007 with a guillotine, but Cruz has made huge strides since then, cementing himself as the world’s best at 135 pounds, so this is a compelling matchup that should deliver some very competitive action.

Headlining the card is a big Middleweight showdown between former title challenger Nate “The Great” Marquardt (31-10-2) and surging wrestler Rick “Horror” Story (13-3-0). Marquardt has been one of the world’s best Middleweights for years and represents a big step up in competition for Story, but Story’s ability to secure takedowns and work from top position is the perfect style to exploit Marquardt’s weaknesses.

UFC Welterweight bout:  Nate Marquardt vs. Rick Story

Odds:  ( Marquardt / Story )

Betting Pick:  Marquardt

Bet on this fight at Bodog.com

In the main event of the evening, surging young wrestler Rick “Horror” Story will face the toughest challenge of his career as he takes on long-time veteran Nate “The Great” Marquardt. Marquardt is extremely dangerous and well-rounded, but bouts against Yushin Okami and Chael Sonnen showed that he can be overwhelmed by guys who are capable of outwrestling him, and Story’s wrestling is extremely effective. Marquardt is a wily veteran, though, so he will give Story some looks he has never seen before, so this should be a very competitive fight.

Rick “Horror” Story is coming off the biggest win of his career, a unanimous decision drubbing of Thiago “Pitbull” Alves. Despite Alves’ striking prowess, Story completely neutralized him with wrestling and clinch work and landed quite a few shots of his own for good measure. Story is a very good wrestler with heavy hands, a bruising top game, solid takedowns, and a great ability to neutralize opponents in the clinch. He is not necessarily a great finisher, but like Jon Fitch he puts his boxing and wrestling together well and is great at neutralizing his opponents’ offense and taking fights over.

Nate Marquardt is one of the best Middleweights in the world, but he always seems to fall short when it matters the most. An extremely well-rounded fighter, Marquardt can punish guys with his hands, has good takedowns, and can work very effectively from top position. The only major hole in his game is that he has trouble stopping dominant wrestlers and is not very effective off his back. He should enjoy a striking advantage against Story in both power and technique, but it is crucial that he uses his wrestling defensively to avoid getting steamrolled by takedowns and worked over on the ground.

This is a tough fight to call. Marquardt is clearly the more versatile of the two and a bigger threat to finish, but Story’s strengths do play right into Marquardt’s weaknesses. The only fighters who have given Marquardt trouble are top-notch wrestlers who can force him to work off his back, but also have the striking prowess to not get overwhelmed on the feet. Unfortunately, although Story is a great wrestler with solid boxing, I don’t think his takedowns are dominant enough for him to force Marquardt down consistently or that his boxing is good enough to keep Marquardt from picking him apart. This won’t be a one-sided fight, but I think Marquardt should be able to neutralize Story’s wrestling and land enough punches on the feet to earn the decision nod.

Prediction:  Nate “The Great” Marquardt via Decision.
