UFC Light Heavyweight bout: Phil Davis vs. Tim Boetsch

Odds:  (-625 Davis /+425 Boetsch )

Betting Pick:  Davis

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

In what promises to be an entertaining Light Heavyweight bout, IFL veteran Tim Boetsch will square off against former NCAA Division 1 National wrestling champion Phil Davis. Boetsch has had mixed results in the octagon, but is a very tough guy with effective Muay Thai and a good clinch game. Davis, for his part, is a physically gifted wrestler with good striking and submissions, so Boetsch is going to have his hands full here.

Tim Boetsch burst onto the UFC scene with an exciting win over David Heath in which he memorably threw Heath on his head like a ragdoll. Since then he has basically alternated wins and losses, but he is a dangerous opponent for anyone because he is a large, strong Light Heavyweight with very effective and versatile striking. The biggest impediment to his success is his cardiovascular conditioning, as he tends to gas out relatively quickly.

Phil Davis has no cardiovascular problems at all. A dominant wrestler with a stifling top game, good punching, great ground and pound, and effective submissions, Davis has it all. The only real question mark he brings into the ring is how well his chin will hold up, since it has never been sorely tested.

Honestly, it is unlikely that Boetsch will have much for Davis. He has a chance to do some damage in the standup, but it is unlikely that Davis will spend much time trading shots with him. I expect Davis to overwhelm Boetsch physically with his superior strength and wrestling, taking him down and working him over before finishing him once Boetsch gasses out. Davis by T/KO.

Prediction:  Phil “Mr Wonderful” Davis via first round T/KO.

UFC Light Heavyweight bout:   Quinton Jackson  vs. Lyoto Machida

Odds:  (+215 Jackson / -275 Machida )

Betting Pick:  Lyoto Machida

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

In the main event of the evening, two former Light Heavyweight champions, both coming off losses, will try to reinsert themselves into the title picture as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson faces Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. Machida tasted defeat for the first time in his last fight, while “Rampage” saw his return to the ring spoiled by Rashad Evans. Both of these guys are still firmly at the top of the division, though, so all it would take is a win here to put either of them back in the title picture.

Rampage, who became a star in Japan’s PRIDE organization and later captured the UFC Light Heavyweight title by knocking out Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell, is a very dynamic fighter with great wrestling, great submission defense, a solid chin, and extremely heavy hands. While he tends to not use his offensive wrestling very much, he is very good in the clinch and nearly impossible to take down. Usually, he prefers to stand and let his hands go, something he does to very great effect. He has a ton of punching power, and his accuracy and handspeed are pretty good too. Still, to survive against a striker of Machida’s caliber, he is going to want to score some takedowns and control range with the clinch as much as possible.

Machida is definitely one of the premier strikers in the world. Although he was knocked out in his last fight by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, there is no denying the effectiveness of Machida’s kickboxing or how difficult he is to hit. To go with his striking he has a very underrated submission game. That said, on the ground underneath Rampage is not where he wants this fight to take place. As always, he would rather turn this into a technical kickboxing match where he can backpedal and counterpunch until he finds an opening.

This is going to be a hard fought match, because Machida is hard to get a hold of and Rampage is hard to put away. Rampage is the more versatile fighter, but Machida’s style is frustrating and Rampage showed he can be taken off his game in the Rashad fight. I think Machida should take this one with superior footwork, movement, and hand speed. Machida by decision.

Prediction:  Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida via Unanimous Decision.

UFC Welterweight bout:  B.J. Penn vs. Matt Hughes

Odds:  (-170 Penn / +140 Hughes )

Betting Pick:  BJ Penn

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

The co-main event is a very interesting rubber match between two former Welterweight Champions. B.J. Penn, coming off two straight losses to Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, returns to the Welterweight division to face off with Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, who Penn beat for the Welterweight title all the way back in 2004. Hughes, who defeated Penn by TKO in their 2006 rematch, is coming off three straight wins, including a very impressive submission victory over black belt Ricardo Almeida.

Matt Hughes is clearly one of the most legendary fighters in UFC history. A dominant wrestler with great ground and pound and very underrated jiu-jitsu, Hughes had a stranglehold on the Welterweight title for years. Even now, with his career winding down, he has some of the most dominant takedowns in the sport and his submission game, as he showed against Ricardo Almeida, is still improving. The only hole in Hughes’ game is his boxing. He is technically proficient but lacks power, reach, and speed.

B.J. Penn is one of the most naturally talented fighters in the sport. An amazing grappler with great boxing and some of the sport’s best takedown defense, Penn is extremely skilled in every aspect of the fight game. Sometimes, though, he tends to look unmotivated and lethargic in the ring, and his conditioning has been a question mark in many of his past fights. Penn’s recent losses to Frankie Edgar could do one of two things. It will either hamper his motivation even more or it will light a new fire under him and allow him to start fighting up to his potential again.

The outcome of this fight depends on which B.J. Penn shows up in the ring. If he looks unmotivated or out of shape, Hughes has more than enough left in the tank to get this fight to the ground and wear Penn down from top position. If Penn shows up ready to fight, though, his takedown defense and boxing should be more than enough for him to control this fight and earn a decision win. His recent losses, and the fact that this is a rubber match, lead me to believe Penn will show up in good shape, stuff takedowns, and punish Hughes on the feet en route to a unanimous decision win.

Prediction:  BJ “The Prodigy” Penn via Unanimous Decision.

UFC Lightweight bout:  George Sotiropoulos vs. Joe Lauzon

Odds:  ( Sotiropoulos / Lauzon )

Betting Pick:  Sotiropoulos

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

The opening bout of the evening pits two skilled 155 lb. grapplers against one another as Joe Lauzon meets surging Australian contender George Sotiropoulos. Both of these guys have world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, so this promises to be a very competitive fight if and when it hits the ground. Sotiropoulos is starting to knock on the door of the title picture, and a win here could be what it takes to earn him a shot at the belt, so the stakes in this one are pretty high.

Joe Lauzon, who burst onto the UFC scene with a win over former champion Jens Pulver and then had a solid showing on Season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, is one of the most accomplished grapplers in the Lightweight division. His submissions, not to mention his sweeps and escapes, are as good as they come, and he is a threat to anyone in the division on the ground. The only thing keeping him from being a top contender for the belt is his lack of standup power and his mediocre wrestling. Still, he is not awful on the feet technically speaking and even if he can’t dictate when a fight goes to the ground, his sweeps, escapes, and submissions help him control fights on the ground anyway.

Sotiropoulos, who first appeared on Season 6 of The Ultimate Fighter, has looked unstoppable since his stint on the show. Mixing top-notch submissions, solid wrestling, and very effective boxing, Sotiropoulos has easily handled every test put in front of him so far. What makes him so dangerous is that, so far, he has yet to show any glaring holes in his game. His ground game is obviously his best attribute, but he is effective in every range, and that makes him a threat to anyone in the division.

I think this matchup heavily favors Sotiropoulos, stylistically. Both guys are incredible on the ground, so the grappling game should be pretty much a stalemate, but Sotiropoulos easily has superior boxing and wrestling. I don’t think Lauzon is going to be able to get this fight to the ground, and he will get punched around on the feet. Sotiropoulos by decision.

Prediction:  George Sotiropoulos via Unanimous Decision.
