In the opening bout of the evening, two young and promising welterweights will go at it as James “Lightning” Wilks takes on Canadian prospect Claude “The Prince” Patrick. Patrick is an impressive 12-1 with nine wins by submission, while Wilks rebounded nicely from a tough loss to Matt Brown, turning in a dominant performance in his last fight. What makes this fight so interesting is that both guys have great gound games, but their styles are very different, so this one could be the sleeper fight of the night.

Claude Patrick, a skilled Canadian with only one loss as a professional, has a very slick and effective ground game with very dangerous submissions. Patrick is something of a rarity in that he brings both quality submissions and a powerful takedown attack to the table. Many grapplers have subpar wrestling, and many wrestlers have subpar submission skills, but Patrick brings the complete package when it comes to grappling. Where he still has work to do is in the standup, where he will have a significant disadvantage to Wilks.

Wilks, one of the many Brits featured on this card, has a fairly formidable ground game of his own. While he will be at a disadvantage in terms of wrestling, he also has very slick submissions from both top position and off his back. His ground game is not as complete as Patrick’s, but he is very dangerous nonetheless, and he compensates by having a far superior striking game. Wilks’ punching is crisp and accurate, he is effective from both range and in the clinch, and he uses his jab extremely well to control distance and push his opponents around.

Wilks is a very skilled grappler and has standup that easily trumps Patrick’s, but I think Patrick’s superior wrestling will be the difference-maker in this fight. Patrick is going to have trouble winning striking exchanges, and the two guys have very similar jiu-jitsu skills, but it has been proven time and time again that takedowns can make a gigantic difference in the scoring of close fights. I think Patrick will be able to force the fight to the ground when he wants to, and that coupled with positional control from top position should be enough to earn him the unanimous decision win.

Prediction:  Claude “The Prince” Patrick via unanimous decision.

Middleweight bout: Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama

Odds:  (-240 Bisping / +190 Akiyama )

Betting Pick:  Michael Bisping

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

The main event of the evening is a big Middleweight showdown between Ultimate Fighter winner Michael “The Count” Bisping and Japanese standout and former judo star Yoshihiro Akiyama. Bisping has had mixed results recently and Akiyama is coming off a tough loss to Chris Leben, but both guys are still top players in a Middleweight division that is wide open at the top, so this could be an important fight.

Bisping, who won The Ultimate Fighter with ease and then followed it up with successful stints at both Light Heavyweight and Middleweight, is a very well-rounded fighter. His kickboxing is very crisp and technical, although he is notoriously light on power, and he has good submissions and a dangerous ground and pound game to go along with it. While he doesn’t have any actual wrestling background, his wrestling has actually come a long way over the course of his career, and he has pretty decent takedowns and above-average takedown defense.

Akiyama, one of the biggest Japanese stars to appear in the UFC, was a very accomplished judo player before stepping into Mixed Martial Arts. Obviously some of that translates to his fighting, and so he has quality submissions and good takedowns, especially from the clinch. He also has technically sound boxing, although like Bisping he lacks too much punching power for his standup to be especially dangerous.

I think that, stylistically, this matchup favors Bisping. Akiyama has fairly solid boxing, but Bisping is much better on the feet. That, coupled with his underrated jiu-jitsu and solid takedown defense, should be enough to allow him to control the pace of the fight and earn the decision win.

Prediction:  Michael “The Count” Bisping via unanimous decision.

UFC Welterweight bout: Dan Hardy vs. Carlos Condit

Odds:  (-155 Hardy / +125 Condit )

Betting Pick:  Dan Hardy

Bet on this fight at Sportsbook.com

In the semi-main event, British standout Dan Hardy will step into the ring with well-rounded veteran Carlos Condit in a top-level Welterweight match. Condit is one of the more well-rounded guys in the division, but Hardy is easily the best striker at 170 pounds in the UFC, so this is a very interesting matchup, especially considering that Hardy just got done fighting Condit’s teammate Georges St. Pierre.

Condit, an 8 year veteran of the sport who made his UFC debut after the merger of WEC’s higher weight divisions, is a very dangerous, well-rounded, and underrated fighter. He has good boxing with some power, very solid wrestling, and a dangerous submission attack, which makes him the complete package. While he is very good at every range of the fight game, though, he is not particularly dominant in any one area, which could be a problem against a specialist like Dan Hardy.

Hardy, one of Britain’s top stars, is easily one of the best 170 pound strikers in the world. In his last fight against Georges St. Pierre, he also showed very impressive submission defense and an uncanny ability to stay out of trouble on the ground in bottom position. Although St. Pierre completely neutralized his offense, Hardy looked extremely resilient and hard to control. On the feet, there is no one in the division who can best Hardy, which is a huge advantage obviously against anyone.

I think Condit, as good as he is, is overmatched in this one. While he is good at everything, the only way to stop Hardy is to completely control him physically using wrestling, clinch work, and top control. Condit isn’t physical enough to overpower Hardy, his wrestling is not good enough to keep Hardy down reliably, and his standup is not nearly good enough to hang with Hardy. Condit is a tough guy, and notoriously hard to finish, so he will probably hang around until the end, but he is clearly outgunned here. Hardy by decision.

Prediction:  Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy via split decision.
