A potential barnburner has been added to UFC Copenhagen as lightweights Lando Vannata and Marc Diakiese are set to collide.

The news was first reported by MMA Newsome and later confirmed by MMA Junkie and other news outlets. An official fight announcement is expected soon.

Vannata came into the UFC with an 8-0 record. However, he has gone 2-3-2 with the promotion since. Despite an inconsistent record, one thing “Groovy” always brings to the table is excitement. And after getting back on the win column against Marcos Rosa Mariano earlier this year, he’ll look to make it two wins in a row for the first time under the promotion.

Diakiese also bounced back from a recent skid as he suffered three defeats in a row. “Bonecrusher” got back to winning ways, however, when he outpointed Joseph Duffy earlier this year.

UFC Copenhagen takes place September 28 and will be headlined by a middleweight bout between Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier. Fan favorite Gunnar Nelson takes on Thiago Alves in the co-main event in a welterweight matchup.

Here’s how the card is shaping up so far:

  • Jack Hermansson vs. Jared Cannonier
  • Gunnar Nelson vs. Thiago Alves
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Lina Lansberg
  • Ion Cu?elaba vs. Khalil Rountree Jr.
  • Lando Vannata vs. Marc Diakiese
  • Micha? Oleksiejczuk vs. Ovince Saint Preux
  • Alessio Di Chirico vs. Peter Sobotta
  • Alen Amedovski vs. John Phillips
  • Nicolas Dalby vs. Alex Oliveira

What do you make of the card?

Jack Hermansson Wanted A Bigger Name Than Jared Cannonier

Jack Hermansson got his wish to headline UFC Copenhagen, but he did not get his wish of the opponent. He wanted to face Kelvin Gastelum, but instead, will take on Jared Cannonier who is 2-0 at middleweight.

Although he gets to headline right near where he lives, Hermansson says many fans are wondering why he took this fight as there is nothing to gain for him.

“Yes [I was looking for a bigger opponent] for sure,” Hermansson told MMA Fighting’s Eurobashpodcast.

“At the end of the day, I wanted to stay active and I wanted to headline this card. When they couldn’t get me Gastelum and I knew that Romero was fighting Costa, I was just kind of like, ‘Who is the next one?’ [UFC] told me that I would get Cannonier,” he explained.

“He’s a dangerous opponent. A lot of people, especially the fans, are asking me why I’m doing this. Instead of just being like, ‘Yes, this is great! We’re going to have you in Copenhagen,’ instead they’re saying, ‘You shouldn’t take this fight!’”

However, Jack Hermansson knows just how good he is and knows he will eventually have to beat everyone. So, he said accepting this fight was no problem.

“We’re definitely in different positions, but I want to show people that I am the best and I can beat anyone; he shouldn’t beat me. If I feel like I’m the best in the world, I’ve got to show people that I can take care of business. Then I think it’s my turn again to get a big [fight].”

Add in the fact that he gets to headline another UFC event, and show off his skills in front of the Scandanavian audience, and is eager for that. He knows this is a big showing for him, and should he win here, he could very well be getting a title shot next.

“I don’t like to turn down fights and also, the UFC need a main event there. As I’ve said before, I want to be that guy in Scandinavia that has that place. Also, I think it’s beneficial for me to get another main event to build my name and get even more recognition worldwide from UFC fans. I think that’s important for the UFC – before they throw me into a title fight I think they want to be able to put me in a big fight that allows me to continue to build my name.”

Who do you think will win the fight between Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier?

UFC Copenhagen has just picked up an exciting light heavyweight contest to its card.

The UFC has announced that promotion veteran and light heavyweight knockout artist Ovince Saint Preux will be taking on Micha? Oleksiejczuk at the show. All the action goes down from the Royal Arena on September 28 from Copenhagen, Denmark.

“OSP” is currently on a two-fight losing skid after not having picked up a victory inside the Octagon since submitting Tyson Pedro in June of 2018. In his latest outing, the 36-year-old was submitted by Nikita Krylov in the second round of their UFC 236 meeting in April.

Now, he’ll take on Oleksiejczuk, who is on an 11-fight win streak. Oleksiejczuk made his promotional debut back in December of 2017 against Khalil Rountree. However, the result was ruled a No Contest after the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) overturned the original decision. Since then, Oleksiejczuk has picked up back-to-back first-round knockout wins over the likes of Gian Villante and Gadzhimurad Antigulov.

It will be interesting to see how Oleksiejczuk fares against a veteran such as “OSP,” who possesses some devastating knockout power and a slick ground game.

UFC Copenhagen Card

  • Jack Hermansson vs. Jared Cannonier
  • Gunnar Nelson vs. Thiago Alves
  • Michal Oleksiejczuk vs. Ovince Saint Preux

The UFC’s debut event in Copenhagen will entertain what promises to be a barnburner of a light heavyweight contest between Ion Cutelaba and Khalil Rountree.

The bout was officially announced by the promotion on Friday.

Cutelaba is coming off a submission defeat to former title challenger Glover Teixiera, but had previously won three of his last four.

As for Rountree, he most recently enjoyed arguably his most impressive win after dominating Eryk Anders via unanimous decision at UFC 236. The victory came following a knockout defeat to Johnny Walker last year. Before that, “The War Horse” notably knocked out Gokhan Saki.

Also announced earlier in the day was a women’s bantamweight matchup between Macy Chiasson and Lina Lansberg.

The card as it stands has three official bouts:

  • Thiago Alves vs. Gunnar Nelson
  • Macy Chiasson vs. Lina Lansberg
  • Ion Cutelaba vs. Khalil Rountree

UFC Copenhagen takes place at Royal Arena on September 28 and will be streamed on ESPN+. There is no headliner as of now, but it is expected to be a middleweight contest between Jack Hermansson and Jared Cannonier.

According to mixed martial arts (MMA) manager Malki Kawa, his client, Jared Cannonier, will headline the September 28 card against Hermansson:

“Cannonier verbally agrees to fight hermansson in Copenhagen. Excited for this. Good work @LouDiBono

The show will be the Las Vegas-based promotion’s first from Denmark, which takes place from the Royal Arena. Cannonier comes off a TKO victory over former 185-pound king Anderson Silva at the UFC 237 pay-per-view (PPV).

As for Hermansson, he has been on a role as of late. The 31-year-old “Joker” is on a four-fight win streak over names such as David Branch and Ronaldo Souza. With another impressive victory at 185 pounds, it’ll be hard to deny the Swede a shot at the title.

However, the same could be said for Cannonier, who would be coming off a win over one of the greatest of all time, but also one of the top prospects in the entire promotion if he defeats Hermansson. It will certainly be interesting to see how things play out inside the Octagon between these two.

What do you think about the matchup between Hermansson and Cannonier?
