Former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor remains entangled among a rivalry with undisputed lightweight best, Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov, and last night, aimed some barbs at the Dagestani along with Dominance MMA leader, Ali Abdelaziz.

McGregor, who is currently slated to headline UFC 257 on January 23 in a high-stakes, potential 155-pound title-eliminator with one-time foe, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier posted on his official Instagram account yesterday, sharing news that his longtime partner, fiancé, Dee Devlin and himself are expecting their third child

That didn’t come as the Dubliner’s sole foray on his social media platforms, however, as late last night, the Crumlin native exchanged some tweets with Khabib’s manager, the above mentioned, Abdelaziz.

In a series of tweets which have since been deleted, McGregor posted, “MeDanaAliGonnaGetcha” — before posting, “Robert Earl Britton is the man“. Robert Britton is, of course, the name Abdelaziz used when he signed up with USADA back in 2001.

Drawing an eventual response from Abdelaziz, the manager claimed McGregor would fail to hold Octagon gold at either lightweight again, or even at welterweight, listing a couple of his clients who would knock him back, including Justin Gaethje, Kamaru Usman, Gilbert Burns, Khamzat Chimaev, Islam Makhachev, Beneil Dariush, Belal Muhammad, and Vicente Luque.

In response, McGregor implied the still retired and undisputed lightweight best, Khabib was avoiding a rematch following their bad-blooded UFC 229 clash in October 2018 — penning, “Decision time for the (duck emoji).

In a rather personal barb aimed at the Straight Blast Gym mainstay, Abdelaziz urged McGregor to seek out an IV drip, questioning if he was “drunk or high“.

Reassuring his manager that he’ll handle business with McGregor in the Octagon, upcoming UFC Fight Island 8 headliner, Khamzat ‘Borz’ Chimaev chimed in claiming, “don’t worry brother (Ali Abdelaziz) I will smash this chicken for you.

McGregor and Chimaev will both appear on Yas Island in January, with the former slated for his aforenoted re-run with Poirier in the promotion’s first pay-per-view event of the year, while Chimaev clashes with perennial 170-pound contender, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards in a rescheduled matchup following a failed tie at UFC Vegas 17 this month.

For Khabib, the 29-0 champion called time on his professional mixed martial arts career immediately following his successful title unification bid against Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 in October, although UFC president, Dana White remains confident Khabib will feature in the Octagon again — ahead of an expected sit down between the two in Abu Dhabi next month.

Nik Lentz

Nik Lentz has detailed his tough 2020 that almost saw him lose one of his eyes after a tough fight against Arnold Allen in January.

Lentz is now set to return after almost a year out that has involved many uncertain months as he foguht to keep both his eyes.

In an interview with MMA News, Lentz explained that an innocuous eye poke left him with triple vision in his fight with Allen and the problem continued way after the final bell rang.

“I ended up having triple vision,” Nik Lentz said. “From that moment on, it was like four-and-a-half minutes left in the fight, I was fighting three guys. I was just trying to hit the one in the middle, I guess. I didn’t work it out at the time. I never had this happen, but in the fight, I was trying to close the eye, but it turns out it’s really hard to try to close your eye when someone is trying to punch at you. It just automatically opens.”

“After the fight, I couldn’t even get out of the cage,” Lentz added. “I couldn’t see the steps. I couldn’t see anything. My vision didn’t return to normal for nine months after that until I had surgery.  I went and had to see a series of doctors. No one could really figure out what the problem was. The eye had healed, but I still couldn’t see right. I still had terrible double vision. I went to specialists and specialists and specialists, and finally I found one.”

Lentz thought finding a doctor who knew what was happening would be the end of his troubles. However, it quickly became clear that surgery was needed and the odds of the procedure being successful were only slight.

“(The doctor) pretty much straight-up said, ‘I might be able to help you but there’s a greater chance than half that we could do something and nothing could happen and your eye is just not going to work right,’” Lentz said. “If it hadn’t fixed and I had not (stopped seeing) double, I would’ve had to remove the eye because seeing with one eye is better than seeing double. When they were both together, I had terrible double vision, so I couldn’t do anything. It was a scary nine months. There were a lot of times where this might have been it. This injury might have been my career. It might have been onto the next phase of life.”

Luckily, Lentz enjoyed a successful surgery. He now has a new found appreciation for fighting after spending the better part of a year thinking he may never compete again.

“It’s been one of the hardest years, but also me and fighting have never been best pals,” Lentz said. “It’s something I’m very good at, but I’m an antisocial person. I never wanted to be in the public light. There were parts of fighting that maybe, in the back of my mind, I always thought I didn’t like it.

“When it was taken away from me, I sort of had to switch that mindset. I started seeing all the things that I loved about it and the things that it’s given me. Maybe I take it for granted. All my friends are fighters. All my friends are coaches. My entire life has revolved around this sport. This is where I grew up. This is where I became a man. (Since coming back), a certain pressure of the fight world has been lifted.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Do you think Nik Lentz will get back to winning ways against Mike Grundy at UFC Fight Island 7?

Joaquin Buckley

Joaquin Buckley will look to keep his momentum going in 2021 with a fight against Alessio Di Chirico at UFC Fight Island 7 on January 16 according to a report from MMA Junkie.

Buckley got a late notice call to face off against Kevin Holland back in August. On that occasion, he was tough and gritty but ultimately fell short against Holland who won five straight fights in 2020 including a highlight-reel knockout over MMA legend ‘Jacare’ Souza.

A couple of months later and Buckey was back in action against unbeaten, highly fancied prospect Impa Kasanganay. ‘New Mansa’ pulled off one of the most epic knockouts in MMA history and LowKickMMA’s knockout of the year to snatch Impa’s hype, undefeated record, and a cool $50,000 bonus. Buckley went on to face an unbeaten fighter Jordan Wright and scored another vicious knockout win.

Post-fight Buckley called for a fight with James Krause but unfortunately, that match-up has not come off. Di Chirico instead gets the call and very well could be fighting for his UFC career on January 16. The Italian has lost three straight fights and most recently dropped a unanimous decision to Zak Cummings in August. Makhmud Muradov and Kevin Holland picked up decision wins over the 31-year-old in 2019. Prior to this losing streak, Di Chirico managed back-to-back UFC wins over Oluwale Bamgbose and Julian Marquez.
