Slobberknocker Alert: Jared Rosholt vs. Oleksiy Oliynyk Added to UFC on FOX 10

Now that Mark Hunt and Antonio Silva have made heavyweight slugfests cool again, we’re pleased to inform you that 9-1 prospect Jared Rosholt will face old-school Russian veteran Oleksiy Oliynyk (often referred to by the more-coherent spelling of Alexey Oleinik) at UFC on FOX 10: Henderson vs. Thomson, January 25th in Chicago. The UFC announced the booking over the weekend.

Rosholt won his Octagon debut on the TUF 18 Finale prelims, brawling his way to a unanimous decision victory against Walt Harris. Though he comes from a very decorated collegiate wrestling background at Oklahoma State University, Rosholt has preferred to stand and throw bombs thus far in his MMA career.

As for Oliynyk, he most recently caught our attention with his neck-crank submission of Mirko Cro Cop at Legend Fight Show 2 in Moscow last month. The win was Oliynyk’s ninth in a row (all by stoppage), including previous submissions of Jeff Monson, Tony Lopez, and Dion Staring. Overall, Oliynyk has compiled a record of 48-9-1 through 16 damn years of competition. He made his MMA debut when the sport still looked like this. He lost to Chael Sonnen in Bodog seven years ago. He was a YAMMA semi-finalist for God’s sake. And now, at the age of 36, he’s fighting in the UFC for the first time. Do you believe in miracles?

UFC Booking Alert: Cerrone vs. Martins, Amagov vs. High Added to January Cards

Though he was considering a drop to featherweight following his recent submission win over Evan Dunham at UFC 167, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone will remain at lightweight for his next Octagon appearance, which will take place at UFC on FOX 10: Henderson vs. Thomson (January 25th, Chicago), just two months after his last fight. It was confirmed over the weekend that Cerrone will face Adriano Martins, a Brazilian veteran and former BJJ world champion who won his UFC debut at UFC Fight Night 32 with a Submission of the Night-earning armbar of Daron Cruickshank.

Prior to the Cruickshank win, Martins scored a decision win against Jorge Gurgel at Strikeforce’s final show in January. Those are fairly impressive victories for a fresh UFC prospect, but a meeting with Cerrone is a major step up in competition. We wouldn’t go as far as to call it a squash match, but it’s certainly an unexpected booking for Cowboy, who has consistently faced well-known opponents throughout his UFC career. Still, it’s unlikely that you’ll hear him complain about it. The man loves to fight, and he has to pay for bull-feed somehow.

Part of the new wave of Russian fighters who have been wrecking shit in the UFC this year, welterweight Adlan Amagov will return to action at UFC Fight Night 35: Rockhold vs. Philippou (January 15th; Duluth, GA) where he’ll face Jason High. Amagov went 2-0 in the UFC in 2013, with wins over Chris Spang and TJ Waldburger, while High is riding his own two-fight win streak in the Octagon, most recently dominating Anthony Lapsley to a unanimous decision victory at UFC 167.

In the midst of all the panic and fury surrounding UFC 167‘s aftermath, a rather notable fight-booking completely slipped past us. Apparently, Josh Thomson and Benson Henderson are fighting in the main event of UFC on FOX 10 (January 25th, Chicago). I had no idea. I found this out randomly today while reading one of Crooklyn’s interviews on BloodyElbow, in which Thomson describes his match-up with Henderson as “like looking in a mirror” and suggests that Anthony Pettis doesn’t really need surgery for his PCL tear.

This will be Henderson’s first fight since losing his UFC lightweight title to Pettis in August — and marks his return to FOX, the channel that didn’t quite make him a star. As for Thomson, he’s been on ice since his TKO of Nate Diaz in April, and was supposed to fight Pettis for the belt next month at UFC on FOX 9 before Showtime pulled out.

With TJ Grant’s return still in question, the winner of this fight would seem poised for a title shot. Your predictions, please.

Booking Roundup: Gonzaga vs. Miocic at UFC on FOX 10, Thiago Silva vs. OSP at Fight Night 35

While Robbie Lawler‘s career resurgence has been the talk of the town lately, there’s been a certain Peking man quietly racking up wins in the heavyweight division in equally impressive, not to mention violent, fashion. His name is Gabriel Gonzaga, and after being released from the UFC/semi-retiring (the latter of which is all the rage these days) back in 2010, “Napao” has strung together five wins (all finishes) alongside just one loss, with four of those wins coming in the UFC.

On the heels of a first round dismantling of Shawn Jordan at UFC 166, it seems that the 2006 Mundials champion will be receiving a significant step up in competition for his next bout when he faces Stipe Miocic at UFC on FOX 10 in January. Miocic recently rebounded from his first career loss — a second round TKO at the hands of Stefan Struve — by treating Roy Nelson‘s face like Jenna Jameson treats secretly installed home security cameras at UFC 161 back in June. Gonzaga has struggled when facing the upper-echelon of the heavyweight division his entire career, so this fight may very well be make-or-break if he ever hopes to fight for a title again.

UFC on FOX 10 goes down from the at United Center in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 25.

In other fight booking news…

Less than a fortnight prior to Gonzaga and Miocic’s sure-to-be-slugfest, the seemingly unfirable Thiago Silva will square off with Ovince St. Preux at Fight Night 35, which transpires on January 15, 2014 from the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Georgia.

Despite missing weight for his fight with Matt Hamill at Fight Night 29, putting on a piss-poor performance, and only defeating Hamill by virtue of the TUF 3 finalist being in even worse shape than he was before he retired, Silva is still tapdancing on eggshells in regards to his UFC career. That he’s receiving a top-15 opponent in St. Preux — who scored a vicious KO over Cody Donovan at Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen in August (improving his overall UFC record to 2-0) — leads us to believe that this the UFC’s way of telling Silva to finally pull his head out of his ass.

The numbers suggest that neither of these fights will go the distance and history suggests that Silva will definitely fail his post-fight drug test, so does anyone care to make a prediction for these fights, Nation?
