Vitor Belfort: ‘It’s not fair that they test me seven times and only test [Chris Weidman] once’

Vitor Belfort will try to add another title to his resume when he takes on UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman on May 23 in Las Vegas, but wants his opponent to be randomly drug tested for UFC 187.

Speaking to the Brazilian media during UFC 184 in Las Vegas on Saturday night, “The Phenom” said he was randomly drug tested seven times since his fight with Weidman was announced for the first time in 2014, but feels that the commission hasn’t treated the champion the same way.

“In 2013, I was the only one (tested randomly). I was tested seven times for my fight with Weidman. Seven times,” Belfort said. “Did they test my opponent seven times?”

The UFC will install a new policy regarding drug tests on July 1. All fighters on the roster will be subjected to random out-of-competition testing. The promotion will also administer mandatory, enhanced out-of-competition testing to main event and championship fighters on all cards beginning that date.

Several UFC stars tested positive in random drug tests recently, and Belfort believes that more fighters will fail drug tests with out-of-competition exams.

“The funny thing is that everybody is clean, nobody do anything wrong. But when they started testing everybody, how many got caught? Forty percent? That shows that for the system to work, everybody has to be tested equally,” he said. “If they come test me for my fight with Weidman, they have to go test Weidman as well on the same date, same time. That’s an equal system. It has to be fair. It’s not fair that they test me seven times and only test him once.”

Belfort, who failed a random test in 2014, which eventually made the Nevada Athletic Commission to ban testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), welcomes more testing.

“We know how the system works these days,” “The Phenom” said. “I don’t think the athlete does anything he doesn’t know, so I want them to test me every day. Come take my blood, my urine, but has to be equal for everyone.”
