Alexandre ‘Capitao’ was cut from TUF: Brazil 4 due to brain aneurysm
RIO DE JANEIRO — Jungle Fight featherweight champion Alexandre “Capitao” de Almeida was one of the fighters included in the Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 4 original list, but he won’t be on the show.
“Capitao,” who tried out for the reality show after winning 12 of his past 14 fights in Brazil, was notified by the Nevada Athletic Commission that his pre-fight medical exams showed a brain aneurysm just two days before flying out to Las Vegas to report.
“I had already taped interviews in Manaus, they filmed my family and everything, but I got that news when I was about to travel,” de Almeida told MMAFighting.com. “The [NAC] got my exams and cut me from the show.”
De Almeida thought his career would be over, but then he decided to do something about it.
“I was depressed and thought I would never fight again because brain injuries are serious,” he said. “I was devastated for two weeks, thought my career was over. I decided to go to Sao Paulo and do more exams. They have the best doctors in Sao Paulo. I told them what happened, that I never felt anything wrong, and they did a cerebral angiography with contrast. I got the results Wednesday, and the exam came back clean.
“It was a miracle, or the lab changed my exams,” he added. “There were three different Alexandres that day in the lab, so I don’t know what happened.”
After losing the chance of his career, “Capitao” hopes to sign a deal with the UFC.
“I lost this great opportunity because of this problem. I’m waiting for a chance, maybe sign with the UFC. I’m hopeful,” de Almeida said.
