RIO DE JANEIRO — Roan Carneiro returned to the Octagon in impressive fashion in February, choking out Mark Munoz in less than two minutes at UFC 184. Originally a welterweight, “Jucao” now plans on making a title run in the middleweight division.
“I want to fight at 170 pounds, but I’m in a comfortable position at 185 pounds right now, and the UFC said they have plans for me in this division,” Carneiro told MMAFighting.com. “I plan on dropping to welterweight one day, but I don’t know. I can’t even say I perform better at 170 after a win like that. We’ll see.”
“Jucao”, who already expected to stop Munoz in February, is now riding a six-fight winning streak with five finishes.
“I knew I would finish the fight. I didn’t know if it would be via submission or knockout, but I knew I would finish him,” he said. “The fight might have looked easy, but my camp wasn’t. The fight started eight weeks before UFC 184. I had many injuries and things to overcome before winning the fight.”
Carneiro will be forced out of action for at least four weeks after he goes under the knife for an elbow surgery, but already targets his next opponent.
“Munoz was the No. 13 in the rankings, so now I want to fight a top 10,” “Jucao” said. “I don’t care who my next opponent is, just bring me a top 10 and the fight is going to be the same thing. I’m motivated by challenges. I want to fight a top 10, move up the ladder and get closer to a title fight.”
“Tim Kennedy is a guy that I would like to fight. Or maybe the winner of Michael Bisping vs. C.B. Dollaway,” he continued. “Those are good options. These are the guys that I have in mind right now.”
Kennedy hasn’t fought since having his four-fight winning streak snapped by Yoel Romero in September. Bisping and Dollaway are scheduled to meet at Montreal’s UFC 186 on April 25, and both will try to get back on track following stoppage losses to Luke Rockhold and Lyoto Machida, respectively.
