The backlash following Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s loss to Nate Diaz at UFC 196 was substantial enough to make you think the Irishman spat in a little girl’s face.
Having lost his other two professional defeats by way of submission, it didn’t come as a complete shock that someone like Diaz was able to soften McGregor up on the feet and then finish him on the ground. As a matter of fact, there are plenty of fighters stretching from lightweight to welterweight who possess a similar makeup.
In a recent interview with Mike Bohn of MMAjunkie.com, Donald Cerrone stated that he believes he could have produced a quicker finish.
“I wasn’t surprised at all,” said Cerrone in regards to Diaz’s victory. “That’s how I would have fought. I would have went in there and took his ass down and submitted him right away. I’m not even going to start on the (expletive) (expletive).”
The relationship between McGregor and Cerrone is not short on bad blood, seeing as “Cowboy” was briefly linked to filling in for lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 before Diaz got the call.
“I got nothing to say about that (expletive) (expletive) to be honest with you,” added Cerrone. “It is what it is. He did run his mouth, but when he sees me face-to-face he’s going to have to – I don’t play that game. When I see him I’m going to check him and see what’s up. I don’t give a (expletive) where it’s at. I’d love to fight the dude, but it’s a fight that’s not going to happen for a long time.”
For what it’s worth, Cerrone recently captured victory in his 170-pound debut by submitting Brazilian Alex Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 83 this past February. If McGregor is able to thwart Diaz in their rematch, the door is more than open for a grudge match opposite “Cowboy.”
Though it may depend on this.
