UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was forced to exit a scheduled fight for the first time in his career earlier this month.
Cormier was set to defend his title against Jon Jones, but an injury suffered in training scrapped that. Jones will now meet Ovince Saint Preux at UFC 197 for the interim title, with the winner moving into a meeting with “DC” later this year.
After undergoing successful surgery recently, Cormier appeared on “UFC Tonight” Wednesday to explain what happened.
“I had a kick checked. I fell over not knowing what happened,” he said. “By end of the weekend, my leg was very swollen. I did an MRI because of all of the swelling and found out I tore a ligament.”
Cormier also made waves when he put out an invite for Saint Preux to come to AKA and train with him. OSP declined, but the move started a Twitter war between the champion and Jones.
“It’s an offer you don’t anticipate people taking,” he said. “But by putting it out there, it says: ‘anyone but Jon.’ The enemy of my friend is my friend. I’d help anybody but Jones.”
