Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre continues to tease his return to MMA. St-Pierre did a six-week training camp in late 2015. Once that camp was over, he would decide if he is able to comeback to MMA at the age of 34.
Yet “GSP” never made an announcement.
GSP talked to Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour about the state of negotiations with the UFC and how he is looking to fight top names rather than fight for the belt when and if he returns to MMA.
“I’m gonna tell you something,” St-Pierre said. “The belt is the title, and maybe I shouldn’t say that. Maybe my manager will be angry. Yes, the belt means a lot.
“I would rather be known as the best ever than holding the belt. If you’re the best and even if you don’t have the belt and you’re the best, it’s more gratifying. The belt is a material thing. It’s good. I won it a few times. But I want to fight the best, the biggest name.”
He decided to take a break from MMA following his split decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167, but is now looking to make a big splash once again in the sport.
“When I do something, I want to do it big,” St-Pierre said. “I want to be the best. I want to fight the guy who’s the best, who’s the biggest name.”
It’s very possible that St-Pierre returns at the biggest event of the year, which is UFC 200 in July. Who St-Pierre would face?
There are many options on the table for both the UFC and St-Pierre, but as we’ve grown accustomed to, we can only wait and see if he decides to take one of them.
With Conor McGregor supposedly retired, however, the promotion could certainly use St-Pierre’s star power.
