Nate Diaz appears to be in campaign mode. The UFC Bad Boy was tweeting in reference to Conor McGregor while “The Notorious” one was celebrating his history-making knockout of Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 this past Saturday evening. While McGregor was at his UFC 205 after-party in New York City, Diaz was …. at McGregor’s UFC 205 after-party in New York City.
Featured above via TMZ Sports is video footage of Diaz outside of Marquee New York, the club where McGregor held his official UFC 205 after-party in NYC this past weekend.
Although no real information has surfaced regarding what he was doing there or if the two had any interaction of any kind, it is probably safe to assume that Diaz’s presence at the NYC club has something to do with a third fight between the two.
It’s worth pointing out that not only does Diaz want the third fight, but McGregor’s head coach also made it clear this week that he would prefer a third fight with Diaz for his star pupil rather than a title defense against top-ranked 155-pound contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson as well.
Diaz met with UFC officials after the UFC 202 loss to McGregor, which came by way of narrow judges decision, hoping to secure another immediate rematch so that the two, who to this day remain tied 1-1 after two fights, could settle the score once and for all.
As far as McGregor’s coach is concerned, Diaz could and would beat either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Tony Ferguson if they fought. John Kavanagh appeared on Ariel Helwani’s latest edition of “The MMA Hour” this past Monday and outright said he would prefer Diaz as McGregor’s next opponent more so than anyone else.
“I think Nate would beat either Tony or Khabib,” the SBG Ireland head coach told Helwani on Monday afternoon. “I think he really turned a corner with the Michael Johnson fight. I think we saw a new version of him. I think he looked fantastic in both Conor’s fights.”
Kavanagh continued, pointing out the fact that he believes the UFC will lean towards Nurmagomedov as the next opponent for McGregor because he is the number one contender at 155 pounds, but he’s more interested in seeing Diaz-McGregor 3.
“Now, I understand Khabib is the number one contender and it’s probably gonna be him if that’s how the company works but for me, interest wise, the Nate fight would interest me greater because of that.”
For now, Conor McGregor is expected to take a break from the fight game as he is expecting the birth of his first child with his longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin in May of 2017, and even noted that he might never fight again if he doesn’t get an ownership stake in the UFC.
Don’t worry though, McGregor’s father is confident that fans will see his son fight again.
