UFC 206 went down from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada tonight (Saturday, December 10, 2016). Fans were treated to a truly unforgettable night of action.
To no one’s surprise, Cub Swanson and Dooho Choi were awarded matching $50,000 Fight of the Night bonuses for their legendary encounter on the pay-per-view main card. While it was officially made Fight of the Night at the post-fight press conference, many are predicting that it stole Fight of the Year honors as well. The two power-punching featherweights bludgeoned each other over fifteen minutes of increasingly dramatic and draw-dropping action. Both men would be rocked during the battle, but both refused to back down, refused to go away. Swanson did just a bit more down the stretch to capture a unanimous verdict from the judges, but the young ‘Korean Superboy’ figures to raise his stock significantly, even in defeat.
Elsewhere in main card action, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone captured one of two Performance of the Night bonuses for his climactic head kick finish of nemesis Matt Brown in the co-headliner. The two welterweights engaged in their own blood-and-guts battle in which each man hit the deck during the first ten minutes. On another night, Cerrone and Brown may have taken home Fight of the Night honors. Cerrone sealed the victory – and his own bonus check – with crushing walk-off head kick knockout a minute into round three. Cerrone has finished four straight opponents since moving up the scales to the welterweight division.
Finally, Lando Vannata banked his own $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus check in the Fight Pass featured prelim. The Jackson-Wink product performed the night’s first walk-off head kick knockout, but this was of the spinning wheel kick variety. His heel met John Makdessi’s chin and separated him from consciousness in the first round of their lightweight tussle. It was the second resounding performance for Vannata in two UFC appearances.
