3rd belt? McGregor’s coach says Woodley’s ‘just another wrestler with an overhand’

3-division champion? Conor McGregor’s coach, John Kavanagh doesn’t think Tyron Woodley would be a ‘massive challenge’.

Even before he won his second UFC belt in as many divisions, Conor McGregor has already sized up and had public exchanges with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley. His coach John Kavanagh has recently discussed the prospects of possibly going for a third belt, and while there will be a massive size difference, he doesn’t think it’s going to be too big of a problem for them.

“I’d fancy him in there with Woodley,” Kavanagh said during a Q&A session in Australia. “He’s just another wrestler with an overhand right, and that’s the type Conor grew up knocking out.

“So I wouldn’t see a massive challenge in that.”

While his most recent performance was heavily criticized, it hasn’t stopped Woodley from trying to get super-fights, or claiming he’s ‘on the cusp of breaking through and becoming that star’. Since winning the belt, he has challenged middleweight champion Michael Bisping, Nick Diaz, and also offered to fight Conor in his home town.

McGregor of course, is still trying to get that big money boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, making interdivisional match ups like these in MMA seem even less likely.

According to Kavanagh, he prefers SBG regular Gunnar Nelson to get that shot on Woodley instead.

“I would like to see Gunni get that belt,” he added. “Gunnar Nelson will be the next SBG world champion.”
