The boxing superfight between undefeated pugilist Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC champion Conor McGregor was a smashing success. So much so that the Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) event is currently tracking to produce “mid-to-high 4 million pay-per view buys,” per a recent report by Los Angeles Times, which was later confirmed by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.
Earlier this week, UFC president Dana White revealed that Mayweather vs. McGregor did roughly 6.5 million buys worldwide. Those are astronomical numbers and now it seems like the superfight has a chance of beating the domestic record of 4.6 million PPV buys set by Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao back in 2015.
“If we don’t reach the record, we’re going to be very, very close,” said Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza. “We consider it a massive success.”
While Mayweather ended up finishing McGregor via TKO in Round 10 (highlights here), combat enthusiasts around the world were impressed with the UFC champ’s effective boxing skills. If these numbers are right and Mayweather vs. McGregor is on pace to surpass Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, “Notorious” will have yet another record to add to his books (as well as Mayweather).
