Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bantamweight prospect Carls John De Tomas has landed himself in the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) doghouse, as the promotion revealed earlier today (Fri., Dec. 29, 2017) that the Filipino has been flagged for a potential violation dating back to an in-competition test administered on Dec. 8.
De Tomas last competed at UFC Fight Night 123 back on Dec. 9, which means he failed his USADA test during weigh ins just 24 hours out from competition. “Golden Boy” ended up losing his UFC Fight Night 123 bout opposite Alex Perez via second round submission, pushing his promotional record to 0-2.
From the official UFC statement:
Although de Tomas is no longer under contract with UFC, USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy. Under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) also retains jurisdiction over this matter as the sample collection was performed the day before de Tomas’ bout at UFC Fight Night: Swanson vs Ortega in Fresno, CA. Accordingly, USADA will work to ensure that the CSAC has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of de Tomas’ potential anti-doping violation.
Despite De Tomas not currently being under contract with UFC, USADA will still handle the matter accordingly. That includes due process for De Tomas and a thorough investigation of the failed test that may or may not result in a suspension or fine.
At just 21 years of age, De Tomas could have made his way back to the Octagon in the near future. But these failed USADA tests tend to hang over the heads of countless fighters, let alone a young kid who showed little in either one of his UFC appearances.
