The biggest and baddest fighters on the planet came together earlier tonight (Fri., Dec. 29, 2017) for UFC 220’s press conference in Las Vegas, Nevada (video replay here), as UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and top contender Francis Ngannou took to the stage for a little pre-fight promotion.
Miocic was first to answer some questions and immediately paid tribute to Ngannou’s abilities inside of the Octagon.
“Francis is an amazing fighter,” Miocic said. “He’s got great power, he’s very athletic, and he’s a big heavyweight. He’s definitely showing it and that’s why he’s here.”
When asked about Ngannou’s brutal knockout finish over Alistair Overeem at UFC 218, Miocic once again remained cordial.
“Good for him,” Miocic said. “He got the win. That’s an easy night. Those are the best nights when the fight is done early. You go home unscathed.”
The champion’s reaction resulted in a follow-up question that sparked the first verbal exchange between the two heavyweights.
“No, that’s what I signed up for,” Miocic said when asked if he’s intimidated by Ngannou. “Why would I be intimidated by another man? There’s a reason why I’m the champ.”
At that point, Ngannou felt he had to jump in and call Miocic out.
“Don’t lie, Stipe,” Ngannou interjected.
“I think he’ll try to survive,” Ngannou added when asked if Miocic will stand with him. “Whatever he’s going to try I’m going to catch it. And then I’m going to connect. You know what happens when I connect.”
It’s pretty obvious that Ngannou is supremely confident heading into his first UFC title fight. That said, he better not underestimate Miocic. After all, Miocic has finished his last five Octagon appearances by way of knockout and is looking to become the first heavyweight in UFC history to defend the title three-straight times.
We’re going to find out one way or another at UFC 220 on Jan. 20 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside TD Garden in Boston, Mass., if Ngannou’s punching power is enough to stifle Miocic’s current title reign.
