UFC welterweight Paul Thiago (13-3) has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming UFC on Versus 3 (aka UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann) bout with Johny Hendricks on March 3rd at the KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky.
Thiago, who injured his elbow, will undergo surgery to remove bone fragments from from the joint later this week.
According to his manager, Wallid Ismail, the 30-year-old expects a quick and full recovery.
“This surgery is quite simple, but it is something that was making him suffer a little,” Ismail told Sherdog.com. “His elbow got stuck. He wanted to fight, but the UFC understood the problem and gave us the total support.”
No word on weather the bout would be rescheduled or if Hendricks would be given a new opponent for the Versus show.
Thiago has lost two in a row and is 2-2 in his last four matches. He lost a unanimous decision to Diego Sanchez in his last fight at UFC 121 and was also defeated by Martin Kampmann at UFC 115 in June by unanimous decision. The Brazilian is 3-3 in the UFC and has earned each of the “Fight Night” bonuses for his past work.
