Henry Cejudo shocked the mixed martial arts (MMA) world last night (Sat., Aug. 4, 2018) at UFC 227 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., when he edged out UFC flyweight champion and pound-for-pound great Demetrious Johnson via split decision.
It was truly a back-and-forth affair from the opening bell. Cejudo had to shake off an early injury scare but ultimately turned in an elite performance. He shined at points with his quick takedowns and consistent pressure, while landing as much as possible when the opportunity presented itself.
Johnson, of course, showed brilliance in his scrambles and ability to quickly explode for offense. He did have a tough time keeping Cejudo away from him, which is what probably cost him the fight. But there wasn’t much of a drop off from Johnson’s previous title fights. Cejudo just played it well en route to the title-clinching win.

With this performance, Cejudo walks away the second ever UFC flyweight champion. He truly showed an evolution from his first encounter with “Mighty Mouse” two years ago and now has a belt to prove it. A rematch with Johnson lingers, although Cejudo would prefer a shot at T.J. Dillashaw’s bantamweight crown.
