tysongriffin28sFive time “Fight of the Night” winner UFC veteran Tyson Griffin (14-5) has announced his intention to move down to the UFC featherweight division after a twelve fight career at lightweight with the promotion going 7-5.

Griffin made the announcement by video on his official website www.tysongriffin.com.

He’s been sidelined by a knee injury and was last in the octagon last November at UFC 123 in a controversial split decision loss to Nik Lentz. The fight was his third loss in a row with the UFC which included defeats by Takanori Gomi who knocked out Griffin for the first time in his career, and to Evan Dunham by split decision at UFC 115. Despite the three losses UFC President Dana White disagreed with the loss to Lentz and ensured Griffin would fight again in the UFC.

On his website Griffin spoke about his injury and his intentions to move to 145 lbs.

“It’s going to be a little bit longer before I can commit to a fight. I’ve been having some problems with my knee. I decided to get an MRI. They found some tears in my meniscus, so I decided to get that cleaned out. It’s going to be a few more weeks before I can put my knee to the test and make sure everything is good to go and commit to a fight. Nobody wants to be back in the Octagon quicker than I do. I’ve got some big plans for 2011. Unfortunately, they are put on hold right now. Those plans are to move to 145 and make a run for that belt. So you can see me in that new weight class hopefully looking stronger and better than ever.”
