On Tuesday afternoon, the Nevada State Athletic Commission finally doled out punishments for the post-fight brawl that went down following the Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov title fight at UFC 229 in October 2018.
Their ruling: a six month suspension and $50,000 fine for McGregor, and a nine month suspension plus $500,000 fine for Nurmagomedov. Also suspended for a year and fined $25,000 each were Khabib teammates Zubaira Tukhugov and Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who participated in the fracas.
Those last suspensions are extra relevant now that Khabib Nurmagomedov has announced via his manager that he refuses to fight until his team can fight as well. He now plans on returning in November 2019, preferably at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Khabib Time!
All this news sent shockwaves through the MMA community to the point where few people even bothered to write angry tweets about Jon Jones. He was also in front of the commission over his incredibly long lasting oral Turinabol metabolites, but who cares about that? Let’s take a look at what fighters, coaches, managers, and media members had to say about the McGregor and Khabib punishments.

Statement from Conor McGregor’s manager @AudieAttar on today’s decision by the NAC:
“We are grateful to the commission for their serious focus and the decision which will allow fans to see their favorite fighter return to the octagon.”

Just spoke to Khabib’s manager @AliAbdelaziz00.
On the fine difference:
“I don’t think it’s fair. Khabib gets $500k and Conor gets $50k? I think it’s bullshit.”
On the length of the suspensions:
“That’s fair. They’ll both get six months. But for his teammates, it’s too much.”

Doesn’t matter where you’re from, what’s your color, race or religion we respect each other and if you don’t you will get humbled. We all stand together and have each other’s back every day for life. The first chapter is over but is just the beginning. Stay alert pic.twitter.com/LOkDiqUjg8

I’m so glad this whole NAC with @TeamKhabib Zuba and Abubakar is over. Took a lot of time and stress. I wanna personally thank Chief legal officer of the ufc Mr. Hunter Campbell. Helped with direction, clarity to put my ego aside. Thank you to everyone who helped with the process

I’m not one to defend Conor…. but what exactly did he do beside make more money than Khabib, that would warrant a larger or similar fine!? #UFC

So Khabib is wrong and Conor is a hero for defending his friend? Someone explain this one to me so I can understand. pic.twitter.com/XyFLp3x7pa

Steep penalty. For comparison, Jon Jones was fined $50,000 and given 40 hours of community service for starting the infamous 2014 press conference brawl with Daniel Cormier that spilled into the crowd. https://t.co/tP92y5g3vH

I would love to see that Khabib anti-bullying PSA: “Kids, don’t be bully. Smash bully. I’m Khabib Nurmagomedov.” https://t.co/kSRwoelQFG
