Welterweights Jorge Masvidal and Leon Edwards each captured impressive victories earlier tonight (Sat., Mar. 16, 2019) at UFC on ESPN+ 5 live on ESPN+ from inside O2 Arena in London, England, but their fists unfortunately continued to fly during a backstage melee.
After shocking England’s own Darren Till with a stunning second-round knockout, Masvidal was backstage doing his interview for the UFC London post-fight show. Edwards can be heard in the background extending some sort of challenge to “Gamebred” to fight at a later date.
Masvidal responded with a “maybe, maybe not” before telling Edwards that he should come say it to his face. From there, Masvidal walked over to Edwards and the two started to throw hands.
The action can be seen above courtesy of UFC/ESPN.
While Masvidal’s main event win over Till ended a two-fight losing streak at 170 pounds, the veteran fighter remains one of the more well-rounded fighters in the division. If the promotion wanted to ride this momentum and pin Masvidal against Edwards, who extended his current win streak to seven with a split-decision win over Gunnar Nelson at UFC London, nobody would be upset.
Of course, the promotion would then have to figure out what to do with good old Ben Askren.
UPDATE:
Per ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, local police are currently investigating the backstage altercation between Masvidal and Edwards, who suffered multiple cuts to his face.
Sources say local police is currently at the fighter hotel in London investigating the Masvidal-Edwards altercation. Edwards suffered cuts to the face. They were talking smack backstage and it obviously escalated.
