After two fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship Darren “The Damage” Elkins (12-2) has decided to drop down to 145 lbs and is tentatively scheduled to meet Michihiro Omigawa (12-9-1) at UFC 131.
MMAjunkie.com reported the bout on Monday afternoon, learning of the fight from sources “close to the event” noting that no official agreement is in place yet for the bout.
Elkins, who might be feeling the pressure of being released as the UFC tries to trim down their lightweight division, is 1-1 with the promotion having lost to Charles Oliveira via submission in his last fight at UFC Live on Versus 2 last summer. He debuted against Duane Ludwig in March of last year, earning a TKO victory after Ludwig suffered a serious ankle injury in the first round.
Omigawa returned to the UFC after a three year absence from the promotion earlier this month. He ended up losing a unanimous decision to Chad Mendes at UFC 126, ending a five fight win streak for the Japanese fighter. Omigawa is 0-3 with two stints in the UFC having fought Asian promotions for DEEP, Shooto, Sengoku, ASTRA, and DREAM between appearances amassing a 8-2-1 record.
UFC 131 has not been officially announced but the event is expected to take place on June 11 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia. The shows headliner has been announced as a heavyweight bout between Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos.
