Mixed martial arts veteran Drew Fickett (40-13) has had a rough few years, which included a five fight losing streak, but has seen things pick up in 2010 when he defeated three opponents in one night to win the Shine Fights lightweight Grand Prix last September.
This Friday he was to have met Maximum Fighting Championship lightweight champ Antonio McKee for the belt at MFC 28, but an injury forced McKee off the card. With a week to go the promotion found a replacement in Matt Veach, someone Fickett feels is just as dangerous of an opponent, but feels the result will be the same, his hand raised in victory at the end of the fight.
In an interview with MMAWeekly.com Fickett talked to them about finding new motivation for fighting and how he hopes that exciting wins will help him get into one of the big promotions.
“I’m more motivated than I’ve ever been. I look at fighting as not just a passion, but as a career. I look at it as a responsibility and hold myself accountable for my lifestyle. I have a daughter and there’s a lot more on the line now than when I was just a young kid in college wrestling…I just want to be the best Drew Fickett ever. Now after I’ve built my confidence and I’m in shape and I’m fight-ready, I can smoke anybody at lightweight. It’s not about just winning – it’s about dominating my fights. I’m a fighter’s fighter and I like to fight the best competition out there, and the best competition just happens to be in Strikeforce, the UFC, and some of the bigger events, so I’d like to get in those shows so I can fight the best guys.”
Fickett meets Veach this Friday, Feb. 25, in the co-main event of MFC 28: Supremacy at the River Cree Casino in Edmonton, Alberta. The main card will air live on HDNet.
