Jones Willing To Grant Santos Rematch: ‘I Think That’s Only Fair’

Jon Jones hasn’t offered too many rematches throughout his UFC career, but he is willing to give Thiago Santos another shot at the crown.

Santos, who fought Jones to a split decision back at UFC 239 despite competing on one leg, is currently recovery from surgery for a torn ACL, MCL, and meniscus. The respected Brazilian striker is going to be sidelined for quite some time, which is crazy considering how well he fought the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion in the first place.

Santos recently released a video of his ongoing recovery to social media and things seem to be more difficult than expected. That is, of course, if you value eating and sleeping.

After seeing Santos’ video Jones offered the following words of inspiration to his former light heavyweight counterpart:

“Remember God gives his toughest battles to his toughest soldiers. Life is all about perspective,” wrote Jones via Twitter. “Use this time wisely, I have no doubt you will. Handle this adversity with your head high, never know who you’re inspiring. God Speed.”

Jones, 32, has really only come close to losing twice in his professional career. His infamous clash with Alexander Gustafsson back in 2013 nearly cost him his title, but “Bones” somehow hung on. The other close call came against “Marreta,” who tested Jones through the course of five rounds with heavy leg kicks and powerful combinations.

Considering how well Santos fought — albeit on just one leg — it makes sense that a competitor like Jones would be interested in a rematch. After all, not too fighters force Jones to ride around in a wheelchair after a fight.

“I think that’s only fair,” said Jones about the potential rematch with Santos.

At this point in time Jones and Santos are far from signing the dotted line for a rematch. Jones has made it known that he wants to fight in New York this November and may have a trilogy in store with current UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier. Santos, on the other hand, is going to be nursing his injured knee for months to come, and will have to deal with rising contenders like Johnny Walker, Dominick Reyes, and Aleksandar Rakic when he returns.

But if everything plays out the way it could, “Marreta” may get another crack at Jones sometime in 2020. At least the champ is willing to offer him that.
