Former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson will be watching closely tomorrow afternoon (Sat., Sept. 7, 2019) at UFC 242 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside The Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, as undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov puts his 155-pound title on the line against interim king Dustin Poirier.
Ferguson, who currently owns a staggering 12-fight win streak in the UFC’s jam-packed lightweight division, has already been labeled the next title contender at 155 pounds. Having seen four previous bookings alongside Nurmagomedov fall apart for one reason or another, it only makes sense that the promotion would try to line that up one more time if Khabib takes out “Diamond.” If Poirier is able to upset Khabib then Ferguson would get a shot at him, too.
“El Cucuy” is offering some words of wisdom to both Khabib and Poirier heading into UFC 242. The 35-year-old veteran not only wished both lightweights an enjoyable battle this weekend in Abu Dhabi but he also predicted a rather unlikely finish to the fight.
Best Of Fight To @DustinPoirier & @TeamKhabib Competing This Weekend #ufc242 Cheers Fellas, Enjoy the Battle & Save Some For Me. I Expect A Double Knockout As Usual, Don’t Dissapoint. One Of You Is Next The Time Is Coming To Feel The Real CHAMP SHIT ONLY™? Experience pic.twitter.com/Qt2HYSOjT0

While UFC and company currently have plans to book Ferguson against the winner of Khabib vs. Poirier, things change by the day. If former UFC champion Conor McGregor is able to heal up in time and put forth one of the best self promotions of all time then maybe he can once again leap frog “El Cucuy” and land a rematch against Khabib, or even Poirier for that matter.
But until that time comes fight fans can expect Ferguson to gets his hands on a true lightweight title shot by the end of 2020. That makes him an interesting character to watch this weekend as Khabib vs. Poirier plays out at UFC 242.
