Ultimate Fighting Championship officials announced a featherweight bout between former 155 pound fighter Tyson Griffin (14-5) and Manny “The Pitbull” Gamburyan (11-5) for the upcoming June UFC on Versus 4 event.
Promotion President Dana White announced the matchup today, “Highly-ranked Manvel Gamburyan and the always-exciting Tyson Griffin have verbally agreed to face one another June 26.”
UFC on Versus 4 is scheduled for June 26, no venue has been confirmed for the event but Pittsburgh appears to be the forerunner at this time. No word on if the bout will take place on the Versus televised card was given.
Griffin, a five time “Fight of the Night” bonus winner, is 7-5 with the UFC promotion as a lightweight fighter and makes the move to the 145 lb division after three straight losses. He lost a close controversial split decision to Nik Lentz at UFC 123, a judgment the UFC President disagreed with. The other two losses were to Takanori Gomi at the UFC Live on Versis 2 event by knockout, and to Evan Dunham at UFC 115 by split decision.
Gamburyan is coming off a WEC featherweight title loss to the current 145 lb champ José Aldo. Aldo would knock “The Pitbull” out in the second round of their WEC 51 bout last September. The loss ended a three fight win streak for Gamburyan who moved from fighting as a lightweight in the UFC to fighting as a featherweight in the WEC. The former “TUF 5 Finalist” had a 2-3 record with the UFC before moving to the smaller promotion.
