Boxing: Canelo vs Jacobs

Former WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (39-1-1, 35 KOs) will make his return to the boxing ring tomorrow night (Sat., Oct. 5, 2019) live on DAZN from inside Madison Square Garden in New York City, N.Y., as he takes on Ukrainian specialist Serhiy Derevianchenko (13-1, 10 KOs) for the vacant IBF and IBO middleweight straps.

Golovkin, who lost his middleweight titles in a majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez back in 2018, is coming off a fourth-round knockout victory over Canadian fighter Steve Rolls this past June. “GGG” will look to carry that success into the ring this weekend and regain boxing gold in a city where he has produced a 6-0 professional record.

This weekend’s main event spot will be the second fight of Golovkin’s six-fight deal with DAZN. For his efforts, the 37-year-old veteran stands to bank a guaranteed total of $15 million, per ESPN’s Dan Rafael. That total breaks down to $7.5 million in cash and another $7.5 million in DAZN equity.

While that’s a pretty big lump sum of cash for one of boxing’s biggest draws, Derevyanchenko also stands to make a sizable payday for his main event clash with “GGG.” According to Rafael, “The Technician” stands to earn $4 million for his title fight efforts with a guaranteed payout of at least $5.2 million (likely after the live gate, merchandise sales, and DAZN subscriptions are accounted for).

All that’s left to do is fight. We shall see if GGG lives up to his billing, takes care of Derevyanchenko in devastating fashion, and regains the same title he lost just one year ago.
