MMA: UFC 245-Usman vs Covington

There was no love lost between ex-friends Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal before “Chaos” fought Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title earlier this month at UFC 245, so don’t expect anything to change now.

Covington, who has been calling for a UFC title shot for years, ended up losing to Usman via fifth-round TKO just one week ago. It was one of the more entertaining UFC welterweight title fights we’ve seen in a while, but one that left “Chaos” with a broken jaw and his first loss since getting submitted by Warlley Alves back in 2015.

Masvidal, who is nearing his own UFC welterweight title shot, had nothing good to say about Covington following his disappointing performance opposite Usman. In fact, “Gamebred” believes that “Chaos” got exactly what he deserved.

“Man, I don’t like to always be highly critical of human beings because I’m nowhere near perfect,” Masvidal told CBS Sports Network’s Jim Rome (via MMA Junkie). “But I’m just not with that whole … your career’s based out of getting a rise out of people, right? If I come on your show, and I’m just saying a bunch of controversial stuff for people to be talking about me, just to get reactions out of people, it’s not really my cup of tea, but people do it all the time, and he’s the No. 1 poster boy for that. So he always wants to get a reaction out of people.

“Now this individual, when people are trying to get a reaction out of him, he’s reporting people on Instagram. He took the comments off, so you can’t comment on him. He was saying how negative they were to him and stuff. This is the guy that’s calling people virgins, calling people nerds that live in their parents’ basement, making fun of Brazilians.

“That country, it’s not like it’s a rich country that’s doing well. They’ve got a lot of poverty over there and a lot of people over there that take it to heart what he’s saying, but he doesn’t give a flying (expletive). And he does it all for a like on Facebook, for a paycheck for the three, four, five pay-per-views that it went up with? The guy’s a clown, man. He got what he deserved.”

Covington, 31, has been talking trash to just about everybody over the past two years. Whether he was calling out Usman, Masvidal, Tyron Woodley, or Conor McGregor, “Chaos” continuously put himself out there in order to grab the attention of fight fans everywhere. While most fans grew to hate Covington and wanted to see him lose more than anything, Colby’s planned ultimately worked. He got the attention he needed to lock down a UFC title shot on one of the biggest cards of 2019.

However, Covington wasn’t able to cash in on his earned opportunity and now has to eat his words. Masvidal is just here to remind us that Covington is getting what he deserves after badgering the division for what seems like a lifetime.
