Weili Zhang and Joanna Jedrzejczyk turned in one of the best fights you will ever see last night (Sat., Mar. 7, 2020) at UFC 248 live on ESPN+ PPV from inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, as they battled it out in a five-round war for the undisputed UFC women’s strawweight title. In the end, it was Zhang who did enough in a split decision to retain her title.
Zhang landed right hands early before Joanna returned with combinations to the head, body, and legs. Zhang shook it off and moved forward with heavy hands. Leg kicks for Joanna busted up the champ’s leg. Zhang eventually failed at the fight’s first takedown attempt before landing a huge elbow in the clinch. Jedrzejczyk hung in there to land some big front kicks down the middle.
Zhang came out throwing early into the third. Joanna came back with long punches from range and ended up stunning Weili with a left. Jedrzejczyk started to take control on the feet so Zhang decided to move inside along the cage and clinch. Joanna broke free and Weili scored some shots and left the former champion with a huge hematoma on her forehead.
A wild exchange began the fourth before Joanna landed a massive left hand. Jedrzejczyk kept busy and started to score in bunches before Zhang clipped her inside. The fifth round saw a Zhang left hook rock Jedrzejczyk and left her nose twisted up. Joanna looked to be fading but she came back with huge left hands as the Vegas crowed roared. Both women emptied the tank down the stretch and landed punches until the final bell.
