Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was celebrating its return to action earlier tonight (Sat., May 9, 2020) at UFC 249 live on ESPN+ from inside VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., but that didn’t stop Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz from temporarily stealing the headlines.
In a social media exchange captured by ESPN (shown below), Diaz commented on a post by UFC president Dana White that shared McGregor’s thoughts on UFC 249. Diaz used some profanity to get his point across.
“Shut ur b—chass up,” he said.
That prompted a response from McGregor two hours later. “Notorious” immediately taunted Diaz to sign a contract so they can finally settle the score inside of the cage.
“Shut your eye lid and sign the contract,” said McGregor.
Of course, McGregor and Diaz have already fought twice before. Diaz pulled off an upset and submitted McGregor in their first meeting at UFC 196 back in 2016, while “Notorious” came back to defeat Diaz by majority decision in a rematch at UFC 202 just five months later.
With UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov locked in for a title defense this fall and welterweight superstar Jorge Masvidal likely to get a title shot, it wouldn’t be that surprising if UFC started to discuss a possible trilogy fight between McGregor and Diaz.
After all, McGregor has regained significant momentum since a 40-second TKO win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 this past January. Now would be a great time to settle one of the biggest rivalries in the history of the sport.
