UPDATE: The UFC of officially announced the matchup on Tuesday at UFC.com.
“Verbal agreements are in for an August matchup between Karlos Vemola and Stephan Bonnar,” said UFC President Dana White. “Vemola is an extremely powerful wrestler with heavy hands while Bonnar is very well rounded and known for his incredible ability to take punishment and keep coming forward.”
Bonnar is on a two fight win streak after suffering three straight losses. His last fight was in December where he faced Croatian fighter Igor Pokrajac on the main card of the “TUF 12 Finale”. “The American Psycho” earned a unanimous decision to earn his 13 pro victory. Previous to that bout he squared off with Polish-Canadian Krzysztof Soszynski in back-to-back fights at UFC 110 and UFC 116. Bonnar won the second meeting by TKO, a fight that earned both the “Fight of the Night” bonus, and lost the first meeting due to a cut from an inadvertent headbutt.
Vemola is 1-1 with the UFC, earning a first TKO victory over Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122 last November in his last Octagon appearance. It was “The Terminator’s” debut at light heavyweight after fighting as a heavyweight. Vemola was considered a lighter heavyweight hitting the scale around 222 lbs for those bouts. The win over Petruzelli won him the “Knockout of the Night” bonus. His promotional debut was at UFC 116 where he lost a unanimous decision to Jon Madsen in July of 2010.
