Budding lightweight prospect Joel Alvarez made the most out of his “Prelims” bid earlier tonight (Sat., July 18, 2020) at UFC Fight Island 2 live on ESPN+ from inside Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, when he finished Octagon veteran Joseph Duffy via first-round submission (guillotine choke).
Both fighters exchanged crisp strikes on the feet to begin the affair, including lead leg kicks that would have toppled any normal man. In order to take away Alvarez’s reach advantage Duffy tried to shoot in for a takedown along the cage. Upon entry he found himself wrapped up in a tight guillotine choke courtesy of Alvarez. Duffy tried to wiggle free and fight the hands but “El Fenomeno” refused to give in.

With this performance, Alvarez locks down his second-straight win at 155 pounds after taking out Danilo Belluardo via TKO just over one year ago. The 27-year-old prospect looked really good on the feet and off his back in this matchup, and may have just earned himself a shot at a higher-ranked opponent his next time out.
