GSP says that’s exactly why he wanted to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Georges St-Pierre again had nice words to say about Khabib Nurmagomedov and his fighting skills. He considers the UFC lightweight champion as a fighter who seems unbeatable, which is exactly why he wanted to challenge himself previously called for a bout against Khabib before.
“Khabib was very exciting for me because, for a fighter, a fighter doesn’t think like a normal person,” St-Pierre said while speaking on the MMA TRUFAN podcast (HT: MMA Mania).
“A fighter always wants to fight a guy who seems invincible, a guy who seems like the perfect fighter, who is unbeatable. He has an aura of invincibility. So, that means if I do it I’ll be the first to have ever done it. It’s not a question of money.
“Yeah, the money is there but it’s not a question of money first. It’s a question of glory, of self accomplishment, of making it in a way that you’ll be in history forever, for myself.”
Khabib is taking some time after the passing of his father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, but is expected to face Justin Gaethje in a title unification bout if or when he returns.
There was initial talk of a catchweight bout between GSP and Khabib, or even a lightweight bout that could’ve netted the Canadian a chance at being the first three-division UFC champion. Due to failed negotiations with the UFC, St-Pierre never got the chance to see if he could be the first to beat the dominant Dagestani champion.
GSP instead decided to retire early in 2019, but the UFC hall-of-famer is still constantly training and looks to be in great shape after turning 39-years-old.
