Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar is expected to make his second appearance at 135 pounds when he takes on bantamweight contender Cory Sandhagen this February, per a report by ESPN’s Ariel Helwani.

According to the report, both fighters have verbally agreed to meet on Feb. 6.

Edgar, 39, made a memorable bantamweight debut this past August when he defeated Pedro Munhoz via split decision in one of the best 135-pound fights of the year. “The Answer” had lost two-straight fights before that at the featherweight level so his new success as a bantamweight was a welcomed sight for sore eyes. Given his name and UFC track record, Edgar could shoot to the front of the pack if he defeats Sandhagen early next year and lock down yet another UFC title shot.

Sandhagen, 28, is coming off a masterful performance against ex-champion Marlon Moraes when he finished the Brazilian via TKO back in October. The victory was much needed for “Sandman” after getting choked out in 88 seconds by Aljamain Sterling this past June. The ultra-talented bantamweight has turned in an overall record of 6-1 since his Octagon debut just three years ago. A win over Edgar this February should line Sandhagen up for a title shot sometime next summer.
