Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum: Werdum Looking for the Knockout

Bleacher Report’s Nick Caron:

The hype continues to grow as we inch closer to the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament fight between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem on June 18. As if a fight between two top-10 heavyweights wasn’t big enough, Werdum and his camp have bolstered the feud even further with a video released Wednesday afternoon in which the Brazilian takes a few shots at the Strikeforce Heavyweight champ.

“Overeem, be careful because I am going to break you once again,” he states while pointing at the camera. “If you stand up with me, I’m going to knock you out, and if you go to the ground, I’m going to submit you.”

This bout will be featured as the main event titled Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum, but the fight has an even deeper meaning for these men as they attempt to prove their dominance. Overeem, the Strikeforce champion, has not lost an MMA fight since winning his title back in November 2007. His three-and-a-half year reign in Strikeforce and Dream has earned him the right to call himself one of the elite fighters on the planet.

But Werdum isn’t convinced. In his opinion, he has already proven that he is the superior fighter when he defeated Overeem in their previous fight. Of course, that fight was over five years ago and things have changed since then, but that tidbit of information hasn’t kept Werdum from confidently taunting the champion.

“You know that you’re my son, and you’ll always be my son,” he ends the video.

Expect fireworks next Saturday night when these heavyweight warriors go to battle for pride and the right to call the other his offspring.
