Former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch (23-3-1, 1NC) wants to return to the Octagon in November. He’s looking to take the co-main event slot for UFC 138 in a back-to-back rematch against BJ Penn.
UFC 138 is expected to take place on November 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. The nights headliner should be a heavyweight title bout between champ Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos.
Fitch hasn’t been in the Octagon since his majority draw against BJ Penn last February in the main event of UFC 127. Both men were tentatively scheduled for a rematch at UFC 132 but injuries to both fighters forced the bout of the card.
Fitch underwent surgery to repair his shoulder, which has proven a success, and has been given the go-ahead to begin his next training camp in September.
“Great news. I will be cleared to start training camp September 1st. I’ll be more than ready for UFC in San Jose.”
If both men are healthy by November, each will fight for another shot at the UFC welterweight title.
Fitch fought current champ Georges St-Pierre back in August of 2008, losing by unanimous decision at UFC 87. While Penn faced the champ in his next title defense at UFC 94, losing by fourth round TKO (corner stoppage).
