Boxing standout and former super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan (37-3-1, 27 KO) won’t be seen fighting in the squared circle too much longer.

The 35-year-old plans to make a full move to mixed martial arts after his Dec. 3 bout with Anselmo Moreno.

“If we should win it, we probably will retire from boxing, and Varchinyan will probably go into MMA following in the footsteps of Kimbo Slice,” said Gary Shaw, who is “The Raging Bull’s” promoter. Shaw also promotes Kimbo Slice, the former MMA fighter-turned-boxer who is currently 2-0 as a professional boxer.

The most notable boxer who ventured into MMA most recently was former middleweight and former cruiserweight champion James Toney. He made his debut against Randy Couture at UFC 118 and was submitted in the very first round.

If Darchinyan’s plans are to eventually fight in the UFC, he may have a tougher time getting there due to the weight at which he fights. He currently boxes in the 115-pound bantamweight division. If his plans are to fight in the leading organization, he will need to wait for a flyweight division to be created and even then, he will still need to move up 10 more pounds.

“I will go into MMA,” Darchinyan said. “I will fight in 2012. Long time I wanted that.”

If the UFC is looking to promote a division that is soon to be formed, Darchinyan could be a great fighter to use to build momentum in the division.
