On Thursday, during the UFC 140 pre-fight press conference Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White fielded questions from the media about when the promotion would look at adding a flyweight division to their roster.
White responded by saying “It’s happening.”
The UFC Pres said fans should expect an official announcement this weekend about the 125-pound division, using last weekends TUF 14 Finale as an example of the action everyone can expect from the smaller fighters.
“I told you guys it’s happening, and it’s happening… I should have something by this weekend.”
“If anything proved how awesome the small guys are it was this season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter,’” White said. “How about the finale? The finale was incredible. Diego’s (fight) was probably the best one-round fight I’ve ever seen, and Dodson was just incredible…”
“At 125 pounds, I think you’re going to see a lot of Hispanic and Asian fighters now coming to come compete at that weight,” he said.
Fighters currently in the UFC that jump to mind right away are former bantamweight contender Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson and Team Alpha Male fighter Joseph Benavidez, both of whom could compete for top spot at 125 lbs.
Things are going to get interesting in 2012, added to that all of the free events planned on the FOX network, it could be a very interesting year indeed.
