“On June 8, Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall will rematch and settle one of the year’s most controversial fights,” said UFC president Dana White today. Johnson and McCall put on a Fight of the Night-winning performance at UFC on FX earlier this month in Sydney in the UFC’s first-ever flyweight bout.
The bout was one of two scheduled as a mini-tournament to determine the contenders for the UFC’s first-ever flyweight championship. Although Johnson was announced as the winner, it was revealed that the judges’ scores were mistabulated and the bout was in fact a draw.
UFC president Dana White made that announcement earlier today at UFC.com, pitting the two UFC flyweight semi-final tournament fighters with a date for their rematch after the judging debacle earlier this month at UFC on FX 2.
The UFC on FX 3 show is scheduled for June 8 but does not yet have a city named for the event. The city will be chosen by fans who vote for their choice of the “Hometown Throwdown” event, which also includes a prize of a customized Harley-Davidson motorcycle as well as some live event perks such as sitting beside White for the event.
The two competed against one another on March 3rd as part of the UFC on FX 2 event in Sydney, Australia. Both men battled for three rounds on the television broadcasted main card, with Johnson being named the winner via “majority decision.” It was quickly changed to a split decision and then at the post fight press conference it was declared a split draw.
Johnson (14-2-1) is 0-1-1 in his last two matches, fighting McCall to a draw and losing a bantamweight title match versus Dominick Cruz last October at the UFC on Versus 6 show. The defeat ended a four fight win streak for ‘Mighty Mouse’ who earned wins over Miguel Torres and Norifumi Yamamoto in the Octagon.
McCall (11-2-1) is now 4-0-1 with the draw, and will carry the momentum of winning the last round handily versus Johnson in their first fight. ‘Uncle Creepy’ had his last three fights, before joining the UFC, under the Tachi Palace Fights banner where he earned that promotions flyweight title last August.
