The anticipated lightweight title rematch between Ben ‘Smooth’ Henderson (16-2) and Frankie Edgar (14-2-1) will likely take place this August as part of UFC 150 in Denver.
News of the title rematch was confirmed by MMAjunkie.com on Friday with sources close to the fight.
UFC 150 was made official by “The Denver Post” confirming the UFC would visit ‘The Mile-High City’ on August 11, 2012 at the Pepsi Center.
The two fighters will face off once again for the UFC lightweight strap, but this time Henderson will be the one defending the title after he won the belt from Edgar last February in Japan at UFC 144.
This will be the third straight back-to-back rematch for Edgar who, fought B.J. Penn and Gray Maynard twice.
Henderson has won four straight since joining the Octagon, which includes his win over Edgar. The former WEC champ has earned unanimous decision wins over Mark Bocek, Jim Miller and Clay Guida to get to the UFC lightweight title. ‘Smooth’ has won two straight “Fight of the Night” bonuses and will likely look for his third when he and Edgar rematch in Denver.
Edgar was almost passed over for a direct rematch but pleaded his case to UFC management and was awarded the rematch. The former champ stopped Grey Maynard by knockout at UFC 136 for his last win, in their back-to-back title bouts. Edgar has won three bonuses in his last three matches, which includes two “Fight of the Night” and one “Knockout of the Night” honors.
