Coming off a win this past Tuesday at the UFC on FUEL TV 3 event, the ‘AK Kid’ Cody McKenzie (13-2) already has his next fight in the Octagon.
McKenzie will drop down to featherweight for this bout, facing former contender Chad Mendes (11-1) at the upcoming UFC 148 pay-per-view event.
Officials announced the matchup at UFC.com on Friday.
Coming off a submission victory over a powerful wrestler, Cody McKenzie is now moving to featherweight and wasting no time by taking on yet another wrestling-based powerhouse, one of the division’s elite, Chad Mendes.
UFC 148 is expected to take place on July 7, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
McKenzie earned a first round submission win against Marcus LeVesseur, ending the fight with a guillotine choke submission. The victory against LeVesseur ended a two-fight losing skid for the ‘AK Kid’ who suffered a submitted by Vagner Rocha at UFN 25 last September.
Mendes suffered the first defeat of his career, losing to UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo in January at UFC 142 in Brazil. The knockout loss, ended eleven straight wins for Mendes who went 2-0 in the UFC and 4-0 in the WEC before earning a title shot.
