In just under a months time, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (22-2) will step back inside the Octagon for the first time in eighteen-and-a-half months from his previous fight.
St-Pierre will look to unify the 170-lbs title when he faces interim champ Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC 154, scheduled for Nov. 17 at the Bell Centre in his home-town of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
When the French-Canadian fighter unfurls his banner for the event, it will feature the names of 1,000 of his fans along with sponsors such as Under Armour, NOS Fuel and 888 Poker.
With thousands of fans behind him, as well as signing major sponsorship deals earlier this year becoming the Brand Ambassador for 888 Poker and for the Coca-Cola branded NOS Energy Drink line, Georges St-Pierre is certain to re-assert his status as a fan favorite and as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, when he finally makes his Octagon return.
Originally, GSP had the names of 500 fans on his banner for UFC 137 but with a knee injury sidelining the champ, he was unable to showcase the banner.
The champ added 500 more names via Facebook (Facebook.com/georgesstpierre) asking fans to “like” a post for a chance to include their names on his UFC 154 banner. An amazing 200,046 took fans jumped at the chance by pressing “like” in just three days.
Fans will find out which names will grace the champs UFC 154 banner a few days before the scheduled Nov. 17th event.
St-Pierre walks into this fight with Condit on a nine-fight win streak and will defend the 170-lbs strap for a seventh straight time. GSP earned a unanimous decision in the UFC’s first stadium event in April 2011, beating former Strikeforce champ Jake Shields in Toronto, Ontario.
