Following today’s pre-fight press conference for this weekends upcoming UFC event in London, promotion president Dana White answered questions from the European media about where a win for Swedish fighter Alexander ‘The Mauler’ Gustafsson (15-1) might put him in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Gustafsson is currently scheduled to face Strikeforce import Gegard Mousassi (33-3-2) in the main event of this April’s upcoming UFC on FUEL TV 9 event in Stockholm, Sweden.

In the media scrum white told the media that a win for Gustafsson would put him “in line for a title shot.”

“If he beats Mousasi, this is a big fight for both of those guys, obviously.”

“If Mousasi beats Gustafsson, he skyrockets right to the top of that division. And As far as Gustafsson goes, if he beats Mousasi in that fight, he’s in line for a title shot.”

UFC champ Jon Jones is currently training for his upcoming UFC 159 bout with opposing TUF 17 coach Chael Sonnen, and has the winner of the UFC 157 bout between Lyoto Machida vs. Dan Henderson waiting in the wings.

Gustafsson has a tough fight in front of him in a former Strikeforce champ who is riding a six fight undefeated streak as well as a 20-1-1 record going back to November 2006.

I guess we’ll find out after April 6th if Gustafsson will have done enough to earn a shot at UFC gold.
