In light of the growing coronavirus pandemic in the United States, Bellator MMA made the wise move to call off Bellator 241: “Pitbull vs. Carvalho” on March 13, 2020 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. The fighters had already weighed in and it seemed at first like the show would go on in an empty arena, but it was ultimately too big of a health risk to take.

Continuing that assessment of risk vs. reward, Bellator MMA has decided it’s not worth risking the health of the fighters, their teammates, the production staff, cameramen, refs and athletic commission personnel going forward in May. Here’s more from Ariel Helwani.

Bellator 242: “Bader vs. Nemkov” on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at SAP Arena in San Jose, Calif., was to be a “tent pole” marquee event. Ryan Bader (27-5, 1 NC) would have defended his Light Heavyweight title against Vadim Nemkov (11-2), alongside a “super” fight where Gegard Mousasi (46-7-2) and Douglas Lima (32-7) would’ve fought for the vacant Middleweight belt.

Bellator London: “Gallagher vs. Ellenor” would have taken place one week later at SSE Arena in London, England featuring a long-awaited bout between “Strabanimal” James Gallagher (10-1) and Callum Ellenor (8-2). Bellator MMA had twice tried to put this fight together at Bellator 227 and Bellator 240 before injures intervened.

Bellator 243: “Carmouche vs. Böhm” on Fri., May 29, 2020, had only one fight announced thus far, but it was to be built around the promotional debut of former UFC star “Girl-Rilla” Liz Carmouche (13-7) against newcomer Mandy Böhm (6-0). It’s unlikely we’ll ever know what the rest of this card would have been.

Bellator MMA released the following statement about this difficult decision:

“As always, the health and safety of our athletes, fans, partners and staff remains our top priority. We appreciate the understanding and patience of everyone involved during this incredibly difficult time. Refunds for ticket holders to these events, as well as Bellator 241 originally scheduled for March 13 at Mohegan Sun Arena, will be available at their original point of purchase.”

As Lonely Island once said about the Space Olympics, all other events are pending.

Bellator has
announced all scheduled events set to take place in May have been postponed due
to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The promotion was forced to cancel Bellator 241 on the day of the event earlier this month. It’s president Scott Coker received widespread praise for making the tough call and ensuring all staff received pay for the event.

In a press release last night Bellator announced the postponement of three events set to take place in May, it read.

“Due to the
ongoing safety concerns surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, as well as current
federal, state and local government mandates, Bellator MMA officials today have
announced that three upcoming live events scheduled for May have been
postponed.

These events
include:

  • Bellator 242 – May 9 in San Jose, Calif.
  • Bellator European Series London – May 16 in London
  • Bellator 243 – May 29 in Temecula, Calif.

The
organization will continue to monitor the situation closely and fully intends
to reschedule the events as soon as possible.

As always, the
health and safety of our athletes, fans, partners and staff remains our top
priority. We appreciate the understanding and patience of everyone involved
during this incredibly difficult time.

Refunds for
ticketholders to these events, as well as Bellator 241 originally scheduled for

Bellator 242 was set to take place on May 9 in San Jose California. Light-heavyweight champion Ryan Bader was to defend his title against Vadim Nemkov. In the co-main event, welterweight champion Douglas Lima was due to step up in weight to face Gegard Mousasi for the vacant 185lb title.

Bellator London on May
16 has also been temporarily shelved. Popular bantamweight James Gallager was
supposed to fight Cal Ellenor in the main event. Elsewhere on the card former
Rugby star James Haskell was set to make his MMA debut.

Bellator
243 on May 29 in Temecula, California featured the main event featured new signing
Liz Carmouche vs. Mandy Böhm in a women’s flyweight bout.

John McCarthy sees a bleak future for Jon Jones, who recently had another run-in with the law.

Bellator analyst and former referee “Big John” McCarthy didn’t hold back on his thoughts about Jon Jones’ recent DWI charge. In an nutshell, he expects “Bones” to do time for having another run-in with the law, this time involving a firearm.

“Oh, he’s going to go. On this, guaranteed he’s going to have time that he’s sitting in a cell,” McCarthy told UFC veteran Josh Thomson in a recent episode of the Weighing In podcast (transcript by BJPenn.com). “When you do the fight game, you show how good you are. You are the yin and yang when it comes to your life and your fight ability.

“You are a world champion inside the cage. Outside the cage, you’re an absolute loser.”

McCarthy went as far as stating that the UFC should take severe action once and for all. He also isn’t open to having “Bones” fight in other organizations, and plans to do everything in his power to prevent that from happening.

“If I was in charge of the UFC, I would cut him. Not only would I take his title, I would cut him,” he said. “And I’m telling you this Josh, straight up, if Bellator wanted to sign him, I would do everything I could to say, ‘Why are you doing that, don’t even think about it.’ Because all he’s going to do is bring you bad press.

“What he brings to the cage, in the end, is not going to be worth what he’s going to bring to you on the outside. Because put it this way, he’s been lucky because he hasn’t hurt somebody.

“And I don’t think Jon wants to hurt somebody,” he continued. “But he’s putting himself in positions of where he’s not in control of his faculties to the point where what happens if he hits somebody and they die?”

Jones was released from custody a few hours after his arrest. As shown on video during the arrest, he is claiming to deal with both ADD and anxiety issues.
