The promotional machine for the big UFC 246 return of Conor McGregor has officially started revving up with these two slick videos.

2019 was a pretty big year for the UFC, but it’s looking like small potatoes compared to what the promotion has planned for the first quarter of 2020 alone. Things are kicking off with a bang at UFC 246 on January 18th with the return of Conor McGregor against fan favorite Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone.

It’s a fight that’s largely sold itself since being revealed at the end of November, but of course the UFC is going to help things along with a few killer promos that position the bout as possibly the most epic match-up ever made, featuring some of the most manly men to ever to walk on God’s green earth.

Two such promos dropped on Saturday night during UFC 245, and they were indeed good enough to make me forget about my reservations surrounding Conor’s return and jump on the McGregor vs. Cerrone hype train. Here’s the first one, entitled ‘The Showdown.’

A slowed down cover of The Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black drones in the background as Joe Rogan declares “When Conor McGregor fights, you’re witnessing something that comes along once in a lifetime.” This promo’s pretty well balanced, giving Cerrone his fair share of highlights and accolades.

The second promo, which aired later in the night after the first championship match, was much more McGregor focused. I wouldn’t go so far as to say the UFC is trying to sow doubt in people’s minds about McGregor’s comeback, but they’re certainly highlighting all the reasons he may not be as sharp or focused as he was during his initial 2014-2016 run.

It starts with Khabib’s arm wrapped around Conor’s neck, the tap coming in slow motion.

”I know what I can do, I’ve done it before when I was doubted,” McGregor declares at the end. “And I’m eager to do it again. There’s so many stories, and mine is going to be the greatest of all.”

The first step back to the top goes down in just five weeks. After watching these promos, are you feeling the hype?

Conor McGregor teases of a showdown with UFC welterweight champ Kamaru Usman.

If Conor McGregor’s latest Tweet is anything to go by, the Irishman is looking to become the UFC’s first-ever three-weight world champion.

‘The Notorious’ posted the following Tweet after Kamaru Usman beat Colby Covington yesterday evening in the UFC 245 main event to retain his welterweight title.

“145. 155. 170,” McGregor wrote, clearly hinting at a title fight versus ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’.

McGregor, the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champ, will return to the Octagon next month on Jan. 18 to take on Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout will be contested at 170 lbs., and McGregor is clearly hoping a win over ‘Cowboy’ will fast track him into title contention. The Irishman last fought in October of 2018, when he was submitted by undefeated lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 229 main event.

Usman, who has a notable size advantage over McGregor, earned a $50,000 Fight of the Night bonus for his championship epic with Covington. Both men stood toe-to-toe in the centre of the Octagon and swung leather for almost twenty five minutes, with Usman eventually finishing Covington after dropping him in the fifth round.

UFC president Dana White wants to see Jorge Masvidal face Kamaru Usman next.

Usman successfully defended his welterweight title following a fifth-round TKO victory over Colby Covington in the UFC 245 headliner on Saturday night.

The attention now turns to who his next opponent should be. Usman personally believes Leon Edwards is most deserving of the next crack. However, White believes Masvidal — who has enjoyed a breakout year in 2019 — should be next in what he claims would be a “massive” fight.

Especially after seeing how entertaining Usman vs. Covington was:

“It’s massive,” White said at the UFC 245 post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “So think about this: How many times have we sat in this room, we did the lead-up to this big grudge match, these two guys hate each other going into the fight, and then I’m sitting here going, ‘And that fight sucked.’ How many grudge matches have actually been incredible fights? I say none. Maybe one I’m forgetting about, but they all pretty much suck.

“This grudge match was awesome, two guys in their prime who are at the top of the game, and the fight was the “Fight of the Night” in an incredible card. Yeah, the Masvidal fight vs. Usman, it’s a big deal. He fought (Nate) Diaz for the ‘BMF,’ belt and now to fight for the actual title against the guy who’s tough as nails, it’s fun.”

It would certainly be a huge fight.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has some options for his next title defense.

Usman successfully defended his welterweight title following a fifth-round TKO victory over heated rival Colby Covington in the UFC 245 headliner on Saturday night.

The attention for him now turns to his next potential opponent. For most fans, Jorge Masvidal would be the most popular option. A rematch with former champion Tyron Woodley is also a possibility. However, Leon Edwards makes most sense for Usman.

Edwards is currently on a seven-fight winning streak, having most recently outpointed Rafael dos Anjos. His last loss? To Usman back in 2015.

“There’s a lot of tough guys in the division – a lot, a lot of tough guys,” Usman said at the UFC 245 post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I mean, let’s be honest: If you’re talking about someone who is deserving, Leon Edwards hasn’t lost since he fought me.

“He’s been finishing guys and he’s now found [himself] in a position that I found myself in a little over a year ago, is everyone knew I was one of the toughest guys in the division and they didn’t want to take that gamble and risk on me.”

That said, it ultimately hinges on what the UFC want. And whoever the opponent is, Usman is ready to fight whoever steps up:

“Right now I’m sitting above and looking at all these guys and they’re kind of, you know, all in that pool – all very tightly contested,” Usman added. “They just need to break out, and I’m waiting for whoever Dana and the organization feel is next for me and I’ll be happy.

“I’ll never turn down a fight, and especially now. I’m the champion. If they said this is the next guy, then hey, this is the next guy. But I need to go home. I need the love of my daughter. This has taken a lot.”

New UFC featherweight king Alexander Volkanovski has welcomed a rematch with Max Holloway.

Volkanovski defeated Holloway via unanimous decision to become the new champion in the UFC 245 co-main event on Saturday night.

Utilizing leg kicks to great effect and remaining disciplined throughout the 25 minutes, Volkanovski’s game plan ultimately paid dividends:

“It was a tough one for me,” Volkanovski said at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I stay so composed in there. I’ve got a job to do, right? When I’m in there? I’ve always said that I keep myself level-headed and composed.

“… Obviously, I thought I was winning, but I didn’t know. My corner did a really good job of letting me know that and not getting caught up into his game. My shins are a little sore, but my gameplan went well. So it was good. Again, I was saying, we’re both very high level. It was a chess match in there, and I got the job done.”

The win ended a 14-fight win streak at featherweight for Holloway who reigned as the champion since mid-2017. UFC president Dana White expressed an interest in an immediate rematch and Volkanovski has no problems with that:

“I think he deserves it,” Volkanovski added. “Do I have to beat him to prove I’m a better fighter? I think we had five rounds to do, and I’m pretty sure I won it pretty clearly. But anyways, people are still going to doubt. They’re still going to. But I’ll be ready for it, and he does deserve it.

“… I’ll be better prepared next time. I know we know what works. We’re going to get an even better formula. He might think he’ll get me figured out again, but I’m just too powerful. They go one way, I go another. That’s the thing. I’m so well-rounded. I can just go anywhere with it.”
